Whenever I discuss tires, I often mention the fact that there are multiple types depending on what you’re looking for. Touring tires have always been the most popular ones, with the grand touring models recently becoming the industry standard.
These are the type of tires that sit somewhere between the standard or highway touring models and performance ones. They are a combination of both, doing a bit of everything, but never excelling in either.
The premium options in this category are typically considered the best, with the mid-range models coming very close. There are plenty of models in this category, and the one for today is from Vredestein.
I’ll be talking about the Quatrac Pro, a tire that’s been on the market for roughly 5 years. Yes, I know the Quatrac Pro+ is available, but I haven’t gotten my hands on it yet, so I’ll review it as soon as I get a chance to.
Pros
- Very responsive with plenty of feedback through the steering wheel
- Refinement levels are pretty good for its category
- Performance in dry and wet conditions is excellent
- Competitive price
Cons
- Traction on snow is average
- It needs to a bit more precision
The Features of the Vredestein Quatrac Pro
Even though you’ll find many places that categorize the Quatrac Pro as a performance-oriented tire, the reality is that it’s a grand touring one.
The first feature isn’t one that I frequently mention a lot, but I have to mention it with this tire and it’s the wide vehicle coverage. Unlike most models in this category that are either for passenger cars or SUVs, this model covers both segments. Yes, there are some limitations, but it covers more vehicle types than many of its rivals.
Despite technically failing within the grand touring segment, the tire has a feature we typically see in many performance models. The tread pattern features multiple regions, each one contributing to improving performance in certain conditions.
Vredestein uses a high-silica, high-resin rubber compound for this tire, which is why it’s a tire you can use in lighter winter conditions. The rubber compound means that it should be pliable in colder temperatures, something you won’t see in summer tires.
While most tires in this category come with M+S rating only, this one also has the 3PMSF one. This makes it an all-weather tire, meaning that we should see better snow performance than its all-season competitors.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro in Dry Conditions
Most tires do a fantastic job in dry conditions, but the Quatrac Pro surprises a bit.
It offers very high levels of grip and traction, allowing it to compete with models from the premium segment. This allows it to be one of the best options for enthusiasts who want to have some fun, while still being superb for daily driving scenarios. In almost all aspects, it performs almost as good as the CrossClimate 2, which is the benchmark in this category. This also covers the braking distances, which are shorter than almost all mid-range models.
The handling is another surprising aspect of this tire. Combining the responsiveness and communicativeness is something that can make a tire fun to drive. With that said, pushing it to its limits will reveal that it’s not the most precise one.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro on Wet or Slippery Roads
The impressive performance continues in wet conditions, meaning that the Quatrac Pro remains one of the best in its class.
Thanks to the combination of rubber compound and tread design, the tire’s traction on damp roads is excellent. Accelerating in these conditions is not an issue and even in some aggressive ones won’t result in slip. The cornering grip is also phenomenal, keeping the tire well-balanced and neutral, until you push it past its limits. This results in understeer, especially if you’re braking hard and throwing your car into the corner. Like on dry roads, you’re getting some of the shortest braking distances.
Another aspect the tread pattern helps with is aquaplaning resistance, allowing the tire to remain stable even when going over standing water.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro in Snow
The Quatrac Pro was impressive so far, but when it comes to winter performance, it’s not perfect.
Driving on snow is something it can do well, as long as you’re not asking too much of it. Regardless if you’re driving on packer or unpacked snow, the traction levels are a bit behind some of it rivals. This results in a tire that is more than capable of handling lighter winter conditions, but it’s not the best. You probably won’t have any problems with this and be perfectly happy with the performance it offers.
The performance on ice is acceptable, which is the case with most tires in this category. There is some traction, and it should be good enough if you’re driving cautiously.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro Off-Roading
The Quatrac Pro comes in multiple SUV sizes, but that doesn’t mean it’s a tire you should take off-roading. It’s not designed for that, meaning that the tread pattern won’t deal with these conditions well. Furthermore, the rubber isn’t cut and chip resistant, so it won’t take much to damage it.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro for Sporty Driving
Considering the category and how the Quatrac Pro is advertised, I’ll have to say that it’s a solidly sporty tire. It combines performance with handling very well. Even though it’s not the most precise tire, it has the fun factor, especially on a twisty road. I wouldn’t consider it the best choice for track days, but you can try it if you set your expectations right.
Does the Vredestein Quatrac Pro Ride Comfortably?
The Quatrac Pro is a mid-range model, but offers high levels of refinement, comparable with some premium options in the grand touring segment.
It appears that the pattern was designed with noise suppression in mind, making this a relatively quiet tire. I say relatively because there are some tones you’ll hear, depending on the surface. They aren’t too intrusive, but you’ll hear them at higher speeds. Despite that, I still think it’s a quiet tire.
The comfort levels are also superb, and the tire delivers a very plush ride. You’ll notice some firmness, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It helps the tire with added movements and eliminates any bouncy feeling. This is especially noticeable when going over potholes, as the tire softens the impact nicely and minimizes most of the vibrations.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro Warranty
One thing that puts the Quatrac Pro closer to the performance segment than the touring one is the warranty. It comes with a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is less than most of its grand touring rivals. On the other hand, it’s pretty good when compared with other performance models.
Vredestein Quatrac Pro Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
Affordability is something that Vredestein does well, and we can see that with the Quatrac Pro. Regardless if you’re comparing it with its touring or performance rivals, it’s somewhere in the middle of the mid-range segment, in terms of pricing, which is pretty competitive and attractive.
Should I Buy the Vredestein Quatrac Pro?
The Quatrac Pro feels like it’s in a category of its own. It’s a performance-oriented model, but without too many sacrifices in the refinement segment, so it’s somewhere between both.
I’m talking about a mid-range tire, but one that offers excellent performance in dry and wet conditions. This is the part that makes it seem like a performance tire because it does almost as good as the best in the grand touring segment. Throw in the dynamic handling into the mix, and you’re looking at a competitively fun tire. Winter performance needs a bit of work, but it’s not as useless as some other tires in this segment.
Despite feeling like it’s performance-oriented, the refinement is exceptional. The tire stays fairly quiet in most cases and combines that with a comfortable ride. Affordability is an excellent advantage, but you shouldn’t expect the longest treadwear warranty, at least when compared with the touring models.
Looking at the Quatrac Pro as a package, I can safely say that it’s an magnificent tire for spirited drivers. If you’re not after the longest lasting model, or one that will excel in snow conditions, this is an excellent model to have, despite not being the latest model from Vredestein.
