For most people, getting a new set of tires starts with choosing the type. The most common models you’ll see on the road are all-season touring ones and with good reason. These tires combine performance in multiple conditions with excellent refinement and solid longevity, making them so attractive.
The second aspect people need to consider is class. We all know that the premium models are the best on the market, but the mid-range ones aren’t so bad. In recent years, they’ve come pretty close in terms of performance while still maintaining affordability.
This brings me to today’s model—a mid-range grand touring one. The Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum is already an older model, so should you consider it?

The Features of the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Considering that the Ecsta LX Platinum is an all-season grand touring model, many of the features will revolve around year-round performance.
To achieve this, Kumho used its tried-and-true all-season compound, which allows the tire to remain soft enough to be used in lighter winter conditions. This feature should also allow it to perform in wet conditions.
The rubber compound is molded into an asymmetric pattern, which features 3 types of sipes across the entire tire. On the outboard shoulder and intermediate tread blocks, sipes aim to improve snow traction. The rest are designed to help but also work on improving traction on damp roads.
Another notable feature that helps with wet performance is the circumferential grooves. They’re designed to channel water away from the blocks, allowing the tire to have constant contact with the surface.
The internal structure of Kumho’s tire features twin steel belts reinforced with nylon and polyester cords. These belts are designed to provide durability at higher speeds and help retain a plush ride quality.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum in Dry Conditions
Dry performance is something that the Ecsta LX Platinum does well, considering it’s a mid-range tire. With that said, it’s not perfect.
Under normal driving conditions, the tire works solidly, and the average driver would be perfectly happy. The performance is enough to give you a good amount of grip and traction, so unless you’re too aggressive, you won’t have much to complain about.
Pushing the tire a bit will show its age and class. While it will handle getting a bit carried away, it falls behind some of its mid-range rivals, especially in the corners. The braking distances are good and ahead of the Raptor HR.
Even in the handling department, the tire doesn’t stand out from the crowd. It’s responsive enough for most people, but enthusiasts will find it slow to react. The feedback is also not very pronounced, making this a somewhat dull tire.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum on Wet or Slippery Roads
When it comes to wet performance, the Ecsta LX Platinum does a good job, but like in dry conditions it still isn’t the best in its class.
The grip and traction levels on damp roads are acceptable, allowing it to perform well enough if you’re a cautious driver. Accelerating and cornering aren’t terrible experiences, but you’ll need to ensure you’re not too aggressive with the inputs. Throwing it too hard into a corner will promote understeer a bit more than some of its rivals.
The tire does a pretty good job in terms of safety. The braking distances are short enough and safe for most people despite not being the shortest in its class. Another crucial aspect is the aquaplaning resistance, which allows you to drive over standing water without some serious issues.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum in Snow
So far, the Ecsta LX Platinum has been a decent performer, but its winter performance leaves a lot to be desired.
The tire’s traction levels on snow are far behind many of its rivals, meaning the winter performance is disappointing. Regardless if you’re driving on packed or unpacked snow, the tire will struggle a bit more when compared with many of its rivals. It takes noticeably more distance to stop than General’s previous AltiMAX model.
It’s a similar story with ice performance. The performance is poor, meaning you won’t get any usable traction from it. You’ll also need to consider the long braking distances, which make this almost unusable in these conditions.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum Off-Roading
Touring tires are designed for paved roads, meaning the Ecsta LX Platinum will do a poor job in off-roading conditions. Quick drives on dirt roads are fine, but if you need good performance for harsher conditions than these, you’ll need to consider all-terrain or mud-terrain tires.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum for Sporty Driving
Some manufacturers advertise their grand touring tires as a blend of performance and refinement. With the Ecsta LX Platinum, that’s not the case, so you shouldn’t expect it to be sporty. The performance and handling combination will disappoint enthusiasts.
Does the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum Ride Comfortably?
Regarding refinement, the Ecsta LX Platinum does a solid job that most drivers would be happy with.
The comfort levels are good for a mid-range tire, so most people would be pretty happy. The softer nature of the construction means it can deal with smaller imperfections well and will absorb larger bumps. It’s not overly bouncy, but it’s not as plush as the premium models.
The noise levels are also good enough to categorize this model as a decently quiet tire. Like before, you won’t compare it with the premium models in this category. To be fair, it’s a bit louder even than some of its mid-range models, but it’s not terrible.

A slightly disappointing aspect of the Ecsta LX Platinum is the 50,000-mile treadwear warranty. While it is better than the Majesty 9 Solus TA91, it lags behind the HTR Enhance LX2.
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
Considering everything, the price is quite competitive. A 17-inch model is noticeably cheaper than the Kinergy GT. In addition, the speed rating of this particular size is higher with the Kumho model.
Should I Buy the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum?
When it comes to recommending the Ecsta LX Platinum, some aspects are good, while others are not very good.
The performance is enough for most people who aren’t overly aggressive and aren’t asking too much of the tire. It handles dry and wet roads well, and in most situations, there won’t be any issues. The biggest problem with this tire is its winter performance. While it is usable, it falls behind many of its rivals.
As for the refinement, it’s decent, but nothing spectacular. There is some noise, but it’s not overly intrusive. The comfort is decent and the tire isn’t overly bouncy or harsh. While the price is quite attractive, the treadwear warranty is behind that of some newer models in this category.
The Ecsta LX Platinum is a decent tire, but not one that will impress you. As long as you’re fine with the average performance and warranty, this affordable model may be a good option for you.
