Going on an adventure is an activity that can differ depending on your wishes. For some people like me, that would mean a road trip across the country, driving on paved roads. For others, it can be an activity where you’d drive in off-road conditions.
Regardless of your wishes, there are some things you’ll need if you want to go off-roading. The first and most obvious is a vehicle capable of that because your plain old Maxima wouldn’t do a good job, and the second one is the tires.
For some of the lighter situations, a set of all-terrain tires will be fine, but you’ll need a set of mud-terrain ones for the extremer conditions. While in most cases, a premium model is an ideal option, there are those from the mid-range segment that can do a good enough job.
One of the many models in this class is the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro, which we’ll be taking a look at today.
- Excellent off-road performance
- Acceptable noise levels
- Superb aquaplaning resistance
- Decent road performance
- Will struggle on packed snow
- Comfort levels are average
The Features of the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro
Considering that we’re talking about a mud-terrain tire, the features of the Discoverer STT Pro lean towards off-road performance.
Among the several features that offer the off-road performance of the Discoverer STT Pro is the Stone Armor technology. This is the part of the design in the grooves that act as stone ejectors. As a result, you shouldn’t have to worry about damaging the tire from wedged debris.
An off-road capable tire should deliver excellent performance in mud, and Cooper thought of that. The Discoverer STT Pro features an upgraded version of the famous Mud Slingers to aid in that. They are a combination of notches and trenches, keeping the tread clean of mud. This should provide excellent traction while keeping the performance consistent.
Another aspect of the tire’s tread pattern that should help in mud and lose dirt is the Earth Diggers. They are specially designed shoulder blocks in the form of scoops that should help improve traction in those conditions.
For the most extreme conditions like rock-crawling, we have the Rock Climber Sidewall technology. Cooper implemented this feature in the Discoverer STT Pro that should help the tire in situations when you air it down. The internal construction will handle that, but the additional cleats on the edge of the sidewall will improve the traction.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro in Dry Conditions
Mud-terrain tires aren’t the best for paved roads but are good enough, and we can say the same thing about the Discoverer STT Pro.
Under normal driving conditions, the Discoverer STT Pro will satisfy your needs decently. The levels of grip and traction are solid enough for regular commutes, and you won’t notice massive issues with the tire. You may end up driving on the highway every now and then, and the tire won’t struggle. Once you start to reach the limits, you’ll notice that it’s not the most stable option, but most people wouldn’t go that far. The braking distances are relatively short for a mid-range mud-terrain tire.
As decent as this may seem, the Discoverer STT Pro isn’t a tire you should push hard. It won’t give you the necessary performance to have fun, and you’ll notice it slipping whenever you get aggressive. Another non-impressive aspect is handling. The tire isn’t the quickest to respond, and you won’t get a ton of feedback from it.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro on Wet or Slippery Roads
Regarding wet performance, the Discoverer STT Pro continues delivering usable performance. Again, it’s good enough for normal conditions.
Around town on damp roads, the Discoverer STT Pro won’t have massive issues with the traction. You can accelerate without any slip, and the grip levels will be fine for going around a corner. Keep in mind that we are talking about a mud-terrain tire, so you shouldn’t get too aggressive. The same thing can be said about braking distances. They are short enough to call them safe but are behind the premium models in this category.
Getting too aggressive with the Discoverer STT Pro is something you shouldn’t do, especially at higher speeds. Up until almost highway speeds, the tire is fine, but once you reach a certain point, it doesn’t feel too planted.
The most impressive side of the Discoverer STT Pro is the aquaplaning resistance. Thanks to the large void design, the tire evacuates water without issues, making it stable when driving on deeper water patches.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro in Snow
The Discoverer STT Pro is an all-season tire with an M+S rating, so the winter performance will be limited.
For the most part, the tire will do a decent job in lighter conditions as long as the snow is unpacked. Even when you drive in deeper snow or slush, the tread design will do a solid job of delivering traction. With that said, driving on packed snow can be a bit problematic, so you’ll need to be careful.
The thing to consider here is the rubber compound. As an all-season option, the tire won’t be soft enough to handle extremely cold temperatures, resulting in barely usable performance.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro Off-Roading
Off-roading is what the Discoverer STT Pro is designed for, so it’s where it shows its strength.
On the lighter side of off-roading, like driving on hard-packed surfaces, the Discoverer STT Pro won’t disappoint. It delivers good traction in these conditions, and even if you’re driving a bit faster on a dirt road, it will feel stable and planted. This comes with short braking distances, so you won’t have any issues here.
The area where it seems to do best is mud. Thanks to the mud slingers, Cooper made it a very strong contender in these conditions. Combining the self-cleaning technology will enable it to keep the grooves clean and deliver consistent performance.
Finally, we have rock-crawling, another aspect where I have nothing to complain about. The shoulder design adds more traction when you air it down, and the internal construction won’t have a problem surviving when you drive it in those conditions.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro for Sporty Driving
You shouldn’t get a mud-terrain tire for sporty driving, so you can probably guess how good the Discoverer STT Pro would be.
Combining the limited levels of grip and traction with the handling means that this is a tire that you shouldn’t drive aggressively.
Does the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro Ride Comfortably?
Refinement isn’t something most people would expect from a mud-terrain tire, but the Discoverer STT Pro isn’t the worst.
The comfort levels are acceptable, and the tire softens the larger road imperfections. Hitting a larger pothole will result in a slight jolt and vibrations, but it shouldn’t bother you too much. Driving on bad roads isn’t a terrible experience. The Discoverer STT Pro exhibits some bounciness but it’s not as pronounced as some of its rivals.
Noise is another aspect that the Discoverer STT Pro does decently well. You will hear a roar, especially at highway speeds like a mud-terrain tire. That said, I wouldn’t classify it as the loudest tire in its category.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro Warranty
There aren’t too many mud-terrain models with a treadwear warranty, and it’s the same with the Discoverer STT Pro. Considering the conditions most people will use them in, it’s understandable why manufacturers don’t offer that kind of warranty.
Cooper Discoverer STT Pro Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
In this category of tires, the pricing is pretty close, so don’t expect massive differences. The Discoverer STT Pro is priced slightly lower than some premium models in the mud-terrain segment, making it a good option. This becomes evident when considering that some mid-range options are noticeably more expensive.
Should I Buy the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro?
The Discoverer STT Pro isn’t the perfect tire, but that doesn’t make it a poor choice. When you factor in the performance and price, you will have to live with some compromises, but you won’t get an unsafe option.
On-road performance is decent and will be fine for most people. If you’re not driving like a lunatic, the tire will be fine. Off-roading is where the tire shines, especially when discussing mud. The refinement levels are acceptable, but I wouldn’t classify them as the best.
In my opinion, the weakest point of the tire is the snow performance. Sure, it does well on deep snow or slush, but it will struggle on packed snow or really cold temperatures.
Overall, the Discoverer STT Pro is an excellent option with a few compromises. Most people will be happy with the performance if willing to live with some of the drawbacks I mentioned.
