Don't know the correct size tire to purchase? Start here!
The Bridgestone Turanza 6 isn’t your standard summer touring tire. An average tire of this type may get top marks for dry performance, high-speed stability, and cornering grip. But its wet performance, harsh weather stability, and mileage are usually below par.
In contrast, the Turanza 6 offers the best of both worlds. In tests conducted by the German magazine Auto Bild, it finished first in dry braking distances, straight-line tracking, and cornering grip. This means you can push it to its limits regardless of the weather conditions.
At the same time, it shined in wet road braking tests, stopping much shorter than the likes of Michelin CrossClimate 2, Continental All Season Contact, and Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3. Plus, it delivered unbeatable handling characteristics on snow and ice.
That isn’t to say that this tire has no flaws. While testing it, we realized the Turanza 6 has drawbacks that could potentially hurt its sales. But will those shortcomings be enough to put you off from buying it? Keep reading our Bridgestone Turanza 6 review to find out.
Pros
- Best-in-class wet braking distances
- Offers significant fuel savings
- Can be installed on EVs and hybrids
Cons
- No treadwear warranty
The Features of the Bridgestone Turanza 6
Multiple features cement the Bridgestone Turanza 6’s status as a leader in the summer touring tire category.
Start with its rolling resistance being 3% lower than its predecessor (per Bridgestone’s estimates). This has helped the Turanza 6 earn an A-grade from the EU in rolling resistance, indicating that you can count on this tire to improve your car’s fuel economy.
Another is that its wet braking distances are best-in-class. Its wet cornering maneuvers, as well as straight-line performance on slippery surfaces, are also category-leading. As such, you can count on this tire to safely carry you from point A to point B in the rain.
Still another reason I rate it so highly is that it offers superior mileage. In tests carried out by AutoBild, it finished first for treadwear, enjoying a 22% advantage in mileage over the tire that came second. This means it won’t require replacement anytime soon.
To further sweeten the deal, Bridgestone has made this tire EV-friendly. The Turanza 6 is compatible with both electric vehicles as well as hybrids. This portends well for its sturdiness, as EV tires carry more weight and thus need to be stronger than non-EV ones.
Bridgestone Turanza 6 in Dry Conditions
The Bridgestone Turanza 6 performs as well as expected on dry roads.
Steering response is quick, letting you execute quick lane changes while retaining complete control over your vehicle. Steering feedback is loud and clear, giving you an excellent feel of what is going down there on the road. This is great news, especially for speed-loving drivers.
And what about braking distances? Well, they can seem average, especially compared to summer ultra-high-performance tires. However, juxtapose the stopping distances with tires in the same category, and I see no reason why you’d have any reason to complain.
All in all, while it’s its superb wet performance that has received headlines, the Turanza 6 is no shrinking violet on slippery surfaces either.
Bridgestone Turanza 6 on Wet or Slippery Roads
Before it started developing this tire, Bridgestone asked drivers what they care about most in a tire. The results showed that more than 8 out of 10 drivers want good performance in wet conditions.
Armed with this information, Bridgestone set out to create Turanza 6.
The results?
Shortest braking distances for any tire in this category. Compared with the tire that finished second, it stopped 1.1 meters shorter on the track. This means you can count on it to reduce the risk of accidents in the rain.
The Turanza 6 also shines when it comes to driving straight on wet roads – it’s the best alongside the likes of Continental Premium Contact 6, while outperforming rivals such as Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 and Michelin’s Primacy 6 tires.
And if you have a poor experience with tires slipping on wet roads while turning, the Turanza 6 is the second-best in that category as well. Small wonder, given it aced all these tests, that the European Union awarded it the top grade (A) for wet grip.
Bridgestone Turanza 6 in Snow
The Turanza 6 is one of the most reliable tires for driving on snow.
Tests assessing its performance offer enough proof of that. In three examinations – measuring snow braking at 40 km/hr, evaluating snow handling, and testing snow traction– it consistently secured the impressive second-best position in its class.
However, there’s more to the story than just rankings.
In all three tests, the front position was occupied by Michelin’s CrossClimate 2, an all-weather tire renowned for stellar snow performance. The CrossClimate 2 comes with M+S and 3PMSF symbols, which only come on tires rated for harsh weather.
The Turanza 6 comes with neither of these ratings. Yet, it could give serious competition to a tire that is specifically designed for stability in such conditions. This tells you all you need to know about its excellent ability to keep you safe on frozen and slippery roads.
What’s noteworthy is that the Turanza 6 not only excels in snow performance but also gives tough competition to specialized snow tires like the CrossClimate 2. This means you can trust it to safely take you from point A to point B in harsh weather.
Bridgestone Turanza 6 Off-Roading
Although not designed for off-roading, the Turanza 6 can hold its own on mildly rough terrain.
Think of sand, gravel, and slush. On all three surfaces, its performance inspires confidence thanks to decent handling, short braking distances, and above-average traction (for a tire in this category).
Now, I’m not saying this tire can replace all-terrain or, God forbid, mud-terrain tires. It’s just that an occasional trip to the woods won’t hurt this tire’s tread too much.
Bridgestone Turanza 6 for Sporty Driving
We always look at three factors to decide how well a tire performs for sporty driving. These include:
- Steering response. A tire’s steering response indicates how quickly it responds to the driving inputs. Guess what? The Turanza 6’s response time is less than a second, giving us ample reason to award its steering response the A grade.
- Braking distances. As noted above, the Turanza 6 boasts class-leading braking distances on dry and wet roads. This is great news, as shorter braking distances are one of the biggest factors contributing to your safety during high-speed driving.
- Speed rating. The fact that the Turanza 6 is available in a speed rating of Y indicates that it can withstand sustained speeds of up to 186 mph. This, in turn, makes it an excellent choice to withstand the speeds and demands of aggressive driving.
- Noise levels. Although most speed-enthusiasts don’t consider noise as an important factor when choosing tires, I think they should. After all, high noise levels can detract you from the driving experience. Luckily, the Turanza 6’s noise levels are low.
In conclusion, the Turanza 6 excels in all the crucial aspects we use to measure every tire’s sporty driving credentials, making it an excellent option for dynamic driving situations.
Does the Bridgestone Turanza 6 Ride Comfortably?
Drivers say that the Turanza 6 offers a comfortable ride, just like Bridgestone claims.
Perhaps that has something to do with its sidewall, which is soft, even for a summer touring tire. The sidewall’s bendability helps the Turanza 6 absorb vibrations without much fuss, making sure that the cabin of the vehicle it’s installed stays quiet.
Another way the Turanza 6 achieves noise reduction is via a sound-absorbing foam inside its sidewall. The foam doesn’t just do what its name implies – absorbing sound. It also dampens vibrations, ensuring a quiet and comfortable driving experience.
Need proof to believe in what’s said above? The fact that the Turanza 6 can be installed on EVs should be enough to erase all your concerns. Here’s why.
One of the most important requirements for EV tires is to reduce road noise as much as possible. Or else, they won’t be able to maintain the ride’s quietness, achieved by removing the engine (which makes a lot of noise) with the battery (which doesn’t make any whatsoever).
Bridgestone Turanza 6 Warranty
Bridgestone doesn’t offer a treadwear warranty on the Turanza 6.
However, it does back this tire with a uniformity warranty (first 1/32” of wear). A workmanship and uniformity warranty expanding over 5 years is also on offer.
During the first three years of the uniformity warranty, Bridgestone will reveal this tire free of charge if it feels that any manufacturing defect caused irreparable damage. Then, a perorated warranty will cover this tire over the remaining two years (or until 2/32” of wear).
Bridgestone Turanza 6 Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
At the time of writing, the Turanza 6’s asking price kicks off from $137.
Although not exactly a bargain, the above figure makes this tire look like a good value for money, especially when you compare the asking price with its qualities.
These include class-leading wet braking distances and aquaplaning resistance, as well as excellent wet lateral handling, straight aquaplaning resistance, and snow handling. That too while offering a quiet and comfortable ride (especially for a summer touring tire).
Should I Buy the Bridgestone Turanza 6?
The Bridgestone Turanza 6 can be an excellent fit for various kinds of drivers.
Speed enthusiasts would do well to purchase this tire, given that it performs well on dry roads and offers quick steering response, braking distances, and a high-speed rating (Y).
I’d offer the same piece of advice to drivers who frequently drive in the rain. The Turanza 6 excels on slippery surfaces, as evidenced by the class-leading numbers it has obtained in tests conducted to investigate its performance on wet roads.
Another group of drivers who would most likely be satisfied with this tire are those who drive an EV or hybrid.
