In modern times, flexibility is something that we car owners have to cherish. Thanks to modern technology and evolution of the tire industry, there are endless options. As a result, getting a new set of tires can be a problem for some.
Most tire manufacturers update their lineup regularly, either with updates to existing models or new ones. We often see the same family name with a new model name and based on that we know what kind of tire we’re looking at.
Take BFGoodrich’s Advantage lineup of tires. These are touring models, which is the most common type of tire most people get. I have a few favorite tires from this family and the company threw in another recently.
About 2 years ago, the company announced that it would launch the Advantage Control tires, a version that should be an excellent performer. On paper, BFGoodrich has some claims about the performance thanks to some new technologies.
So, will the BF Goodrich Advantage Control tire deliver on its promises, or will it stay just a marketing campaign?
What are the features of the BFGoodrich Advantage Control?
To make the Advantage Control, BFGoodrich used several of its technologies hoping it would outperform the competition.
The Advantage Control is designed with flexibility in mind, which is why it’s an all-season tire. BFGoodrich went with its all-season silica-infused rubber compound on this. The result of this is a tire with an M+S rating that should be capable of performing throughout the year.
For specific conditions like wet roads, we have the Active Sipe Technology. With it, the Advantage Control tire has more biting edges throughout the tread, which should provide better traction.
Damp roads are one thing, but heavy rain can be a problem at higher speeds. Thankfully, the Advantage Control’s tread pattern is designed with the Aqua-Fume Tehcnology. As a result, the tire should have very good aquaplaning resistance, keeping it planted in heavy rain.
On the refinement side of things, we have two technologies. The computer optimized footprint handles the noise, while the g-Wedge Sidewall Stabilizer works for comfort and handling. Combining both means that Advantage Control tires should be quiet and comfortable without sacrificing the responsiveness.
How does it behave on dry roads?
Touring tires are known for offering excellent performance for daily driving scenarios, which is what the Advantage Control does well.
As a daily driving option, this tire won’t disappoint. The levels of performance are pretty good and most people won’t need more. With the Advantage Control, the levels of traction are high enough to eliminate slip when accelerating even with some more powerful cars. The grip is there, but the tire doesn’t enjoy getting pushed hard, something that most drivers rarely do. A slight downside of this tire are the braking distances. Despite being short and safe, some of its competitors offer marginally better results.
Driving the Advantage Control in a more aggressive manner shows that it’s not a performance tire. The handling is good enough for daily driving, but it won’t be my first choice for a track-day. While it is responsive-ish, it often feels disconnected. You won’t get a lot of feedback and you won’t feel stable pushing it past its limits. Speaking of limits, they aren’t super high. You can push it a bit and you won’t have too many issues. If you’re looking for anything more than that, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?
BFGoodrich made some claims about the wet performance of the Advantage Control. Considering what the tire offers, I believe it could use a bit more improvement.
For regular driving, the tire gets the job done, which is what you’re looking to get from a touring tire. The Advantage Control tire offers solid levels of traction on damp surfaces. It holds the line in the corners well and keeps the car in check. Naturally, going overboard with this will promote understeer in most cases. A slightly positive aspect in the wet traction are the short braking distances. They aren’t the shortest in this class, but are pretty good.
Things don’t improve too much in the handling department in these conditions. The Advantage Control is an easy tire to drive normally, but doesn’t have the wow factor. It gets the job done, as long as you’re not asking too much of it.
For heavy rain, BFGoodrich’s Aqua-Flume technology does a wonderful job. The groove design enables the tire to be very efficient at evacuating water from beneath it. As a result, the aquaplaning resistance is excellent, making the tire stable even at highway speeds.
How does it perform in snow?
Like most all season touring tires, the Advantage Control has the M+S rating. As good as that sounds, the winter performance isn’t something I’d call the best.
The rubber compound does a decent job at delivering performance on dry and wet roads in colder temperatures. It won’t be the same as on a hot summer’s day, but you won’t feel like the tire lacks a lot. Naturally, it doesn’t like extremely cold temperatures.
For snowy conditions, the Advantage Control is usable enough. The tread pattern enables it to bite into snow and provide traction, but it’s not something marvelous. It does decently well on light snow and will struggle a bit over packed one. Driving in harsher conditions than these will show that it’s not a proper winter tire.
Ice performance is almost non-existent. You can be cautious and drive short distances and that’s as much as you should expect from it.
Does the Advantage Control ride comfortably?
For the Advantage Control, BFGoodrich used some technologies to make it well refined. Unfortunately, things aren’t as impressive as was hoping.
On the comfort side of things, the Advantage Control does very well. The tire delivers a smooth ride and absorbs smaller bumps with no problems. With larger potholes it dampens them well, but some of its rivals are slightly better. One thing I really liked is that even on bad roads, the tire doesn’t feel as bouncy as some other models in this class.
Noise levels, on the other hand, aren’t as impressive. Around town, the Advantage Control is quiet enough, especially if you have a well-insulated cabin. Things take a turn for the worse as the speed increases. It’s not a particularly loud tire, but it’s far from the quietest. On rougher surfaces, you’ll notice a deeper growl from the tires, which can be an issue for some drivers.
Is the BFGoodrich Advantage Control ideal for sporty driving?
I’ve reviewed some touring models which were acceptable for sporty driving, but that’s not the case with the Advantage Control.
The first problem are the levels of grip and traction. While the Advantage Control is a tire that will get the job done for everyday driving, it won’t handle anything too aggressive. Getting too happy with the gas pedal can be fun, but that’s not what the tire is designed for.
Handling is another aspect that shows the tire’s true nature. The responsiveness levels of the Advantage Control are decent. I wouldn’t start comparing it with something from the Pilot Sport lineup, but it’s not terrible. On the other hand, you have the feedback which is far from ideal. While the tire is easy to drive, the lack of communication through the steering wheel make it a poor choice for spirited driving.
BFGoodrich Advantage Control Warranty
While the Advantage Control isn’t the best in terms of performance, the warranty is a positive side. The tire comes with a 75,000- or 65,000-mile treadwear warranty depending on the model’s speed ratings. This tread life durability is on par with the best in the grand touring segment.
BFGoodrich Advantage Control Pricing: Is it worth the money?
Even though the Advantage Control isn’t the most impressive tire on the market, the price makes it an attractive option. A 16-inch model costs similarly to some mid-range models, which the tire outperforms in some instances. It’s a solid bang for the buck option.
Should I buy the BFGoodrich Advantage Control?
The Advantage Control is one of those tires that doesn’t seem like it does much, but that doesn’t make it a poor choice. After all, it’s a touring tire, so you probably won’t be looking at it as a track option.
With the Advantage Control, you’re getting solid performance in dry and wet conditions, for a reasonable price. The refinement is also decent enough if you can get over the slightly higher noise levels.
As a touring tire, you shouldn’t expect wonders in the handling department. Also, the Advantage Control is a tire that cannot offer superior snow or ice performance. To be fair, very few tires can, so it’s not the worst thing about it.
Looking at the Advantage Control as a package, it’s a solid option. It’s not the best, but it’s far from the worst. When you factor in the price, you’re looking at a good bargain.
