The automotive industry has a wide range of vehicle types which cover multiple driving conditions. Our regular sedans and hatchbacks are good for driving around town or on the highway, but they’re designed for paved surfaces. On the other hand, you have off-road capable vehicles like SUVs or light trucks that can tackle non-paved conditions.
Having this kind of vehicle is only half of the story because you need a set of tires that can perform in these conditions. Luckily, tire manufacturers have several of those depending on what you require. In most cases, people are looking for a blend of on and off-road performance, which is what all-terrain tires are designed for.
In many ways, these tires are a combination of highway and mud-terrain ones, so they can perform in both conditions. With that said, it’s important to note that they won’t be the absolute best in either, which is fine for many drivers, as long as they’re safe.
Getting a set of all-terrain tires doesn’t necessarily mean you should pay top dollar for them. There are manufacturers like Nitto with its Terra Grappler G2, a tire that’s aimed at the affordable side of this segment, without too many compromises. So, is this true or does it need more work for me to recommend it?

The Features of the Nitto Terra Grappler G2
Considering that the Terra Grappler G2 is an all-terrain tire, you’ll see features that should help it deliver performance on and off-road.
The tire is made from an all-season rubber compound, so it should offer performance in light winter conditions. With that said, it’s 3PMSF rated, so it’s technically an all-weather tire, which should be better than M+S rated models.
Since we’re talking about a tire that should perform in multiple conditions, the tread pattern is designed to help with that. The void ratio is designed to balance performance on paved surfaces and in off-road conditions, so it should blend things nicely.
There is another notable feature that should help in non-ideal conditions. The tread pattern is designed staggered shoulder lugs that should help the tire dig into loose surfaces and improve traction.
Sipes are a critical aspect of any tire as they’re generally responsible for traction on damp roads. Nitto designed this tire with full-depth ones, meaning that the performance shouldn’t degrade as the tire wears down.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in Dry Conditions
Tires with aggressive pattern won’t excel in dry roads, so you shouldn’t expect the Terra Grappler G2 to be marvelous in these conditions. With that said, it’s a solid performer, with enough performance for most people.
Under normal driving circumstances, the tire will provide you with a safe performance. The grip and traction levels are enough to prevent any sudden movements under acceleration or cornering making this a mostly neutral tire. Since we’re not talking about road going model, you shouldn’t expect it to comply with every command in aggressive scenarios. At a certain point, you will overwhelm it and end up with a good amount of understeer on corner entry. I mentioned it’s a safe tire, and it’s evident from the braking distances. They aren’t the shortest even in the mid-range segment, but are above the average, which is pretty good.
The handling dynamics of this tire as you’d expect from most budget-friendly all-terrain tires. It’s decently responsive for most people and the straight-line tracking is good. You lose a bit of feedback you’d normally get with road-going tires, but that’s the tradeoff with most models in this category.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 on Wet or Slippery Roads
There are some affordable models which sometimes struggle in wet conditions. Fortunately, the Terra Grappler G2 doesn’t seem to have an issue with that.
Let me clear the air first. The performance isn’t on the same level as the LTX A/T2 or similar premium tires, but it’s good enough for most people. It offers a good amount of traction to keep wheel slip to a minimum. Some aggressiveness will get it to slip, so unless you’re into that kind of shenanigans, you won’t experience it too often. It’s the same with the cornering grip. As long as you don’t go into corners too fast, you won’t experience any looseness in the tire’s performance, so no understeer or oversteer. Like on dry roads, the braking distances are short enough to be considered safe, which is the most important thing.
The tread pattern is a bit more aggressive than some of its all-terrain rivals, which helps with water evacuation. As a result, the aquaplaning resistance is pretty good, and the stability isn’t compromised.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in Snow
By definition, all-weather tires do a better job in winter conditions than all-season ones. It’s true with the Terra Grappler G2 as well, but not in every situation.
As long as you’re driving in lighter winter conditions, the tire will do a good job of delivering traction. The aggressive pattern can handle unpacked snow, while the block design bites into packed one well delivering enough performance. Safety is also a positive aspect of this tire thanks to the relatively short braking distances. Driving in deeper snow reveals that it’s not a replacement for a winter tire, which you shouldn’t expect.
When it comes to colder temperatures and ice, you’ll start to notice it struggling a bit. It appears that the rubber compound doesn’t remain as pliable as some of its rivals, so the performance isn’t as good. I wouldn’t classify it as unsafe as a summer tire, but I wouldn’t recommend driving too much in those conditions.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Off-Roading
Performance in off-road conditions is something that the Terra Grappler G2 can deliver. With that said, you should keep your expectations realistic, as it’s not a mud-terrain tire.
Driving on hard packed surfaces is something that this tire will deal with easily. Dirt or gravel roads are not a problem, and the tire will handle these conditions well. Even though the traction isn’t on the same level as the premium models, it’s close enough. It handles well, it can deliver the necessary performance and most importantly, it can stop relatively well.
Slightly harsher conditions is where we start to see the tire struggling. It can deal with shallow mud well and as long as you’re not stuck in a large patch, you won’t experience any massive issues. You should be aware that it’s an all-terrain tire, and as such, the off-road performance in extreme situations is limited. It’s also important to note that some of its rivals seem to do a slightly better job in these conditions.
Like many of its competitors, rock crawling can be a struggle, so you shouldn’t expect a lot. You can go over some smaller obstacles, but anything more than that, and you’ll find that it won’t be able to cope.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 for Sporty Driving
Sporty driving is generally reserved for performance tires, meaning that off-road ones don’t do a good job. The Terra Grappler G2 is no different and despite performing good enough for daily driving, it’s not a tire that will handle aggressive driving. It’s the same with the handling, which despite being responsive for an all-terrain tire, is not nearly responsive enough for a performance one.
Does the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Ride Comfortably?
All-terrain tires aren’t the most refined tires in the industry, meaning that the Terra Grappler G2 won’t be as impressive as some touring options. With that said, there are some positive sides to it.
The one worth mentioning is the noise levels. Again, I won’t be comparing it to the Turanza QuietTrack, but as an all-terrain tire, it’s decently quiet. Nitto’s tread optimization does a good enough job to keep the tread roar as minimal as possible. It’s not a whisper quiet tire, but it’s not the loudest all-terrain one either. If you own a well-insulated vehicle, you won’t be bothered too much by it, even at highway speeds or rougher surfaces.
On the other hand, we have the comfort levels which are average-ish. The tire manages to absorb and smooth some imperfections and bumps, but it’s not one that will offer a plush ride. Acceptable is what I would call it, considering that it’s an all-terrain model.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Warranty
When it comes to warranty, the Terra Grappler G2 isn’t the worst choice. The tire comes with a 65,000 or 50,000-mile treadwear warranty, depending on the type of tire – P or LT-metric. This put is somewhere between the Pinza AT and the Dynapro AT2, which is pretty good.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
As far as the pricing is concerned, the Terra Grappler G2 is placed in the competitive part of the mid-range segment. A 17-inch model is priced close to the Vredestein model, which is pretty good. It’s also more affordable than the TerrainContact A/T, so it’s an attractive model in terms of pricing.
Should I Buy the Nitto Terra Grappler G2?
Looking at tires in the mid-range segment means you’ll need to live with some drawbacks. When it comes to the Terra Grappler G2, they aren’t terrible, meaning it’s a very solid choice.
The overall road performance is pretty good. It deals with dry and wet roads decently well, offering enough performance to be considered safe. It can handle snow density well for a 3PMFS rated tire, but it won’t handle freezing temperatures, at least not as well as its premium rivals.
Off-roading is what this tire does well, as long as you’re not expecting the best. For the most part, you’re looking at excellent performance on hard packed surfaces and some decent performance on shallow mud. If you need anything more than that, you’ll need to look at mud-terrain tires.
The refinement is decent enough considering the category, but not the best. With surprisingly low noise levels and acceptable comfort it’s as much as you can expect from a budget-minded all-terrain tire. Speaking of, with competitive pricing and warranty, there isn’t too much to complain about for this model.
If you’re looking for the absolute best all-terrain tire on the market, the Terra Grappler G2 isn’t it. On the other hand, if you need an affordable model with solid performance and no major drawbacks, Nitto’s model is a good choice. Sure, there are better options, but some of them can be a bit pricier.
