In the past several decades, SUVs have become more and more popular. As a comfortable vehicle on the road and can be taken off it, owners want to make the most out of it. For that reason, tire manufacturers are aiming to develop tires that can be driven on all terrains.

In the mid-range lineup, you have Hankook with the DynaPro AT-M, an all-terrain all-season tire aimed at SUV owners. The tire’s goal is to offer a good balance between driving on the roads and off them.

What are the features of the Hankook DynaPro AT-M?

The main feature of the DynaPro AT-M is the structure of the tire. Hankook reinforced the gauge under the tread, and the carcass made the sidewall thicker and included a jointless bead wire. The result of these features is a tire that can take a lot of abuse in some off-roading scenarios.

DynaPro AT-M is designed with a unique stone ejector technology that ensures that the tread is constantly clean. In those situations, the tire will perform optimally.

To ensure that the tire has plenty of traction in off-roading scenarios, Hankook made something called scallop grooves. They are places between the blocks of the DynaPro AT-M and help the tire bite in the surface it’s driving on.

For road performance, the tire features a special tread design with angled grooves on the sides. They are designed to help with wet performance and also keep the grooves clean from mud or slush. In addition to that, the zig-zag pattern should help improve snow traction.

Like most off-road tires, the DynaPro AT-M is designed with a rim protector to avoid damaging the rims in off-roading scenarios.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

As an all-terrain tire, the DynaPro AT-M performs very well on dry roads. Hankook’s idea to increase the footprint by 7 to 8% paid off, especially in terms of stability.

The tread design provides grip and traction, which helps the tire stick to the road. Even though the sidewall is reinforced, the tire still flexes under hard cornering.

Even though you probably won’t be driving hard with the DynaPro AT-M the tire will still have plenty of grip and short stopping distances. It’s among the best in this regard when you compare it with its rivals.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

On wet and slippery roads, the DynaPro AT-M performs exceptionally well. The main reason for my surprise is the fact that all-terrain tires have never been very good at wet driving.

In specific scenarios, the tire may struggle for traction, but only if you accelerate hard. The cornering grip is also excellent, meaning that it will keep you safe and sound on the road.

Thanks to the huge grooves, the DynaPro AT-M has excellent aquaplaning resistance. Not a drop of water gets under the blocks ensuring excellent stability in wet patches.

How is it over snow?

The snow performance of the DynaPro AT-M is not as good as it should be. Hankook made some claims about tuning the tread pattern for improved performance on snow, but that’s not exactly the case.

You will get better performance when compared to an all-season touring tire. The problem is that lower temperatures don’t sit too well with the DynaPro AT-M and the tire struggles.

Don’t get me wrong, the tire is very safe to drive in light snow, but I was expecting a bit more out of it.

Is it comfortable and refined?

When it comes to comfort and noise levels, the DynaPro AT-M isn’t the most comfortable option, but it is relatively quiet.

Driving around town or on the highway will produce very little noise, which is impressive, considering it’s an off-road tire.

The comfort levels aren’t the best, and you will find more comfortable tires in the premium segment. Smaller road imperfections won’t be a problem, and the tire can handle them; the larger ones are the issue. It seems that the tire cannot absorb them quite as well, making the ride a bit harsh.

Is it good for off-roading?

Off-road is what the DynaPro AT-M is all about and delivers on that promise with some excellent off-road performance. As an all-terrain tire, you shouldn’t expect it to be as good as a proper off-road one. Despite that, unless you get into some extreme situation, the tire will be excellent.

The DynaPro AT-M can tackle anything from dirt roads to mud and even some rock crawling. It can tackle even deeper mud without any issues. Rock crawling won’t be a problem as well, but you should consider that it may not be as good as a dedicated off-road tire.

Is the Hankook DynaPro AT-M ideal for sporty driving?

Two things make the DynaPro AT-M not ideal for sporty driving: the application and the way it drives.

Even though the tire has enough grip to go in a corner at a higher speed, the sidewall will flex, leading to a not very fun driving experience. On top of that, the responsiveness isn’t nearly as good as enthusiasts would want it to be.

The second reason is the application. The DynaPro AT-M is a tire that should be fitted to an SUV or a truck and will be driven off-road. In other words, it’s unlikely that you’ll be driving your off-road vehicle on a track.

Hankook DynaPro AT-M Warranty

Off-road tires don’t usually come with an extended warranty or any warranty at all, mainly because they are made to be abused. In those cases, the manufacturer cannot make claims.

The good news for you is that the Hankook DynaPro AT-M comes with a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty for the P-Metric sized tires. It may not be as much as what touring tires come with, but it’s still good enough when you consider the price.

Hankook DynaPro AT-M Pricing: Is it worth the money?

A two-in-one tire that starts from around $100 is worth it. The DynaPro AT-M may not be the best at everything but still manages to combine on-road and off-road performance decently well.

Should I buy the Hankook DynaPro AT-M?

The DynaPro AT-m is a tire that you should buy, but at the end of the day, it’s not a tire that everyone should. To utilize the performance the tire offers fully, you will need an SUV or a truck. The second condition is to use that vehicle for off-roading. If you’re only driving on paved roads, then a touring tire would be better suited.

While it may not be the best in both areas, the DynaPro AT-M still has excellent performance. Dry roads won’t be a problem, as the tire will offer plenty of grip in the corners and traction during acceleration. It won’t wow you with its driving dynamics, but it’s not a tire meant for that.

Wet performance was exceptional and much better than I thought it would. Hankook’s tread design seems to offer improved grip and traction when compared with other all-terrain tires. Also, thanks to the big grooves, the DynaPro AT-M has excellent aquaplaning resistance.

Snow performance is a bit disappointing, not because of the design, but probably because of the rubber compound. Even though the zig-zag pattern is there to help with traction, the lower temperatures make the tire less pliable. The same result is on icy surfaces as well.

The DynaPro AT-M is designed for off-road as well, and in this regard, the tire shines. It’s not the best off-roader in the world, and the dedicated tires will outperform it. As a tire with a combined personality, the off-roading one is exceptional. Deeper mud and even rock crawling won’t be a problem, which other competitors may struggle with.

Comfort takes a bit of a hit, and you may even find some more comfortable tires in the same category. In most cases, the harshest experience is in larger potholes. On the other hand, noise levels are very low, especially for a tire that can do some proper off-roading.

With a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty and a price tag that starts from $100, the DynaPro AT-M seems like a good bargain. When you put in the excellent on and off-road performance, most people will struggle to find a better-performing tire.

  1. When did Hankook DISCONTINUE these AT-M tires and replace them with the better AT2 ??
    New vehicles (my ’23 Ford Ranger came with the AT-M and really wish they were the AT2.)
