If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a sucker for a good performance tire. Even though it’s not something that most people would need, there are people like me willing to sacrifice some longevity or refinement for better performance and handling characteristics.
Don’t take this the wrong way, touring tires can deliver that, but they do it in a safe manner. They offer a blend of everything but fall behind performance tires in terms of grip and traction. UHP tires are the option to go if you own a sporty vehicle and want to get the most fun out of it.
The premium options are always the best, but they’re almost always the more expensive option. This is where mid-range manufacturers come into play. With these tires, you’re getting a good balance between performance and how much you pay for them.
One of the most popular mid-range manufacturers is General and the tire in question is the G-Max AS-07. It’s a model that acts as an upgrade over the G-Max AS-05 and the Grabber UHP, aiming to compete with newer models from rival manufacturers. Did General manage to achieve that with this tire?

The Features of the General G-MAX AS-07
The set of features the G-Max AS-07 offers aren’t something we haven’t seen before, but they do cover all aspects needed to make this an all-season UHP tire.
Speaking of all-season, General utilized its tried and true rubber compound for this model. It’s the go-to formula for a tire that can deliver performance on wet or cold roads.
The asymmetric tread pattern is almost standard on most performance tires and this one I no exception. Down the middle of it, there is a stiffer central rib, which is responsible for responsiveness and handling. You also have the wider shoulder blocks, whose goal is to improve cornering grip by putting more rubber on the outer part of the tire.
There is a network of 4 circumferential grooves across the tire’s pattern which are designed to channel water. This approach ensures that the blocks remain in contact with the road, providing excellent aquaplaning resistance.
As a winter tire, you expect some performance on snow, and this tire covers that. The design features sipes and biting edges around the blocks, which should help with traction. Their goal is to bite into snow, so the tire should be good on packed and unpacked snow.
General G-MAX AS-07 in Dry Conditions
The G-Max AS-07 is a UHP tire, so driving on dry roads is something that it can do well without massive issues.
In daily driving scenarios, it’s a tire that won’t struggle at all. You can drive around town or on the highway and the performance levels will be far higher than what you’d need. As for the braking distances, despite not being the shortest in its class, they’re still exceptional.
Performance driving is what this tire is designed for, and it does that excellently. You’ll have loads of grip and traction, making it a very solid choice for an enthusiastic drive on a twisty road or even on a track. You probably won’t be chasing record lap times, but you’ll have fun.
The handling is there to support the fun factor, but there is some room for improvement. It’s a dynamic tire, offering a good combination of responsiveness and feedback. Unfortunately, it’s not the most precise tire, especially when it comes to making minor corrections mid-corner. It’s far from terrible, but it won’t be the best choice for competitive driving on a course.
General G-MAX AS-07 on Wet or Slippery Roads
The G-Max AS-07 continues to deliver impressive performance in wet conditions as well.
Driving on damp roads is something that this tire tackles easily. The traction levels can handle even powerful vehicles and prevent the tire from slipping on acceleration. Cornering is also a worry-free experience thanks to the grip which prevents any understeer. Like in dry conditions, the braking distances are superb and close to the leaders in the mid-range segment.
The tire remains a good handling one in these conditions, and it’s not a massive problem when you approach the limits. You can handle it and thanks to the dynamic nature, you won’t have any issues getting it back where you want to. A slight complaint is that it’s a bit too light, meaning that you can take it a bit too far with your inputs.
General’s optimized web of grooves channel water very well, allowing the tire to remain stable when driving on standing water even at higher speeds.
General G-MAX AS-07 in Snow
I have to say, as an all-season tire, the G-Max AS-07 does an impressive job in winter conditions.
The tire can tackle snow quite well, proving you with plenty of performance for these conditions. It’s not a winter-tire-performance, but it’s pretty good. The tire deals with packed and unpacked snow well and offers short braking distances in both situations. It also doesn’t struggle with braking in these conditions, offering the performance you’d want to keep you safe. The tire remains an easily controllable and handles well.
Considering the type of tire, ice performance is satisfactory. There is usable traction, which some people will be fine with. The main thing to note is that you’ll need to be careful with the throttle to avoid massive slip.
General G-MAX AS-07 Off-Roading
Even though the G-Max AS-07 comes in sizes that cover a portion of the SUV or light truck segment, doesn’t mean it’s an off-road capable tire. Nothing about it is enough to provide you with the performance you need for these conditions. Some hard packed surfaces may be acceptable, but even then, an all-terrain or a mud-terrain tire will do a much better job.
General G-MAX AS-07 for Sporty Driving
Since we’re talking about a UHP tire, you can expect the G-Max AS-07 to offer a sporty driving experience. The performance and handling combination make this a solid choice for people looking for a fun tire. It offers loads of grip and traction and backs that up with dynamic handling. The only thing worth mentioning is that it’s not the most precise option, even in this segment.
Does the General G-MAX AS-07 Ride Comfortably?
Performance tires often sacrifice a bit in terms of refinement, and the same can be said about the G-Max AS-07.
The tire’s comfort levels are solid, and the tire dampens bumps and potholes well. It absorbs vibrations and doesn’t feel harsh. The problem is that there are secondary movements when hitting a larger bump, so the tire will feel a bit bouncy.
Noise is another aspect where certain rivals do a slightly better job. You shouldn’t expect a performance tire to be as quiet as a touring model, but this one isn’t the quietest of the bunch. There are certain noticeable notes over specific surfaces which aren’t a massive concern, but worth mentioning.
General G-MAX AS-07 Warranty
Many UHP tires come with a treadwear warranty, and the 50,000-mile one you get with the G-Max AS-07 is excellent. To put it into perspective, it’s better than some of its mid-range rivals, putting it on the same level as the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and the Potenza RE980AS+.
General G-MAX AS-07 Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
As far as the price is concerned, the G-Max AS-07 sits somewhere in the middle of the pack. For example, a common 17-inch model is a bit pricier than its direct rival, the Zeon RS3-G1. With that said, it’s a bit more affordable than the g-Force COMP-2 A/S Plus.
Should I Buy the General G-MAX AS-07?
I often discuss mid-range tires, and every time I point out that they’re not perfect. Sure, the premium ones aren’t ideal, but there are fewer compromises. When it comes to the G-Max AS-07, it seems to be a tire where you won’t sacrifice a lot.
The overall performance in dry wet and winter is very good. It offers very high levels of traction for the conditions and does that safely with relatively short braking distances. It handles well with a good amount of dynamic, but it needs to be a bit more precise for me to call it excellent.
Refinement is something that the tire does well, but we start to see a bit more compromises. The slightly bouncy nature accompanied by some noticeable notes show that it’s a mid-range tire. One thing it does as well as its premium rivals is the warranty, and the best part is that you get that at a lower price than its expensive competitors.
Make no mistake, the G-Max AS-07 is an excellent tire that many people will find excellent. Yes, there are some things that could be improved, but for the general masses, it’s a tire that people will be perfectly happy with.
