What are the features of the Michelin Premier LTX?
Michelin is a premium brand, so the Premier LTX gets all the bells and whistles that a tire can get.
The main feature that seems to offer most of the performance of the tire is the EverGrip technology. The main area this technology brings improvements to is in wet performance, especially in braking. Thanks to it, the tire’s braking distances should be very short when compared with other models in its class.
As an addition to it, Michelin combined it with the Expanding Rain Grooves throughout the tire, and the shoulders got the Emerging Grooves. This triple combo is responsible for traction on wet surfaces and snowy conditions, even when the tire is near the end of its life.
The Premier LTX is an all-season tire, meaning that the rubber compound is designed to deliver performance in virions conditions. Michelin utilized a compound enriched with silica and sunflower oil, which gives it the performance in lower temperatures.
As for the pattern, the Premier LTX has a symmetric tread design with a central rib featuring notched ribs and shoulder blocks that are linked. The goal of this design is to bring improvement in the way the tire handles and responds to inputs.
How does it behave on dry tarmac?
The performance on dry roads with the Premier LTX is superb, among the best in this class.
With this tire, you will be getting one of the highest levels of traction that a touring tire for crossover or SUV can offer. Even more powerful cars with aggressive drivers won’t feel like the tire doesn’t perform well. In the corners, the grip is excellent, and you can toss it without worrying about not having enough sticking power.
The Premier LTX is excellent in the handling department, at least as far as touring tires go. It won’t be as dynamic as a performance-oriented tire, but it will satisfy your need. The tire responds pretty quickly to inputs, and the steering feedback is surprisingly good.
How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?
Wet performance with the Premier LTX is probably one of if not the best in this segment. I’ve praised the Continental CrossContact LX25 as the best wet performer, but Michelin’s tire is just as good and, in some situations, slightly better.
The handling with the Premier LTX is marvelous. You feel like you’re constantly in control, and you know what each of the front tires is doing. This also means that you can control the tire mid-corner without fearing that it will lose grip.
Speaking of, thanks to the Premier LTX, you can corner with speeds greater than you’d normally would. Traction is also excellent when accelerating, and the braking distances are among the shortest when stopping.
The tread design with the grooves and sipes gives this tire another great advantage – excellent aquaplaning resistance. the Premier LTX can drive through water and remain very stable and safe.
How is it over snow?
Like most all-season tires, the winter performance is not as good as winter tires, and the same goes for the Premier LTX.
The tire can handle light snow decently and is very usable in those conditions. You’ll get a decent amount of traction and grip, meaning that as long as you don’t overdo it, you will end up with a safe-to-drive tire.
Extremer situations won’t sit well with the Premier LTX, and you’ll need a proper winter tire for those conditions.
Is it comfortable and refined?
Michelin is known for making well-refined tires, and the Premier LTX is no exception.
Comfort levels are superb, and the tire provides a very luxuriously feeling driving experience. It deals with bumps and road imperfections like a champ and does an excellent job at eliminating vibrations in the cabin.
Touring tires are generally quiet, but the Premier LTX is among the quietest. Regardless of the surface, you’re driving on or the speed, the tire remains quiet. Even when you drive over rougher surfaces, the noise is on the lower end of the spectrum.
Is it good for off-roading?
No, the Premier LTX or any other touring tire won’t be good for off-roading. The design of the tread and the compound are the main reasons why you should avoid those conditions.
The grooves and sipes are nowhere near as deep or as wide as an off-road tire, meaning that in most cases, the tire will get stuck. The second problem is the compound, which isn’t that durable on non-paved roads. Shaper rocks can damage it easily, which can lead to uneven wear or a completely torn tire.
With that said, a short drive on a dirt road may be fine, but you’ll need to keep in mind that you’ll have limited traction.
Is the Michelin Premier LTX ideal for sporty driving?
The Premier LTX wouldn’t be my first choice as a tire for sporty driving, but I have to admit that it isn’t the last one either.
Considering that it’s decently responsive for a touring tire and will offer a good amount of feedback, you can have some fun with it. This is backed by the high levels of grip and traction, meaning that you can push it harder. In the corners, you will feel the sidewall flexing a bit, but it won’t be as terrible as with some other tires on the market.
Michelin Premier LTX Warranty
Michelin isn’t known for offering the longest warranty in this industry, and that applies to the Premier LTX as well. The tire comes with a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty which isn’t too bad. The problem is that the competitors like the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus come with an 80,000-mile warranty.
Michelin Premier LTX Pricing: Is it worth the money?
When you look at premium tires, you’ll need to be aware that you are paying a premium price. The Premier LTX starts from around $140, which isn’t cheap for a touring tire. Other contenders in this category are slightly more affordable, and some of them offer very similar performance.
Should I buy the Michelin Premier LTX?
The Premier LTX is one of the best all-season touring tires for your crossover or SUV, and there aren’t too many reasons to steer clear of it.
On the performance side of things, the tire excels in every condition, meaning that dry and wet performance is superb. As a bonus, the handling is pretty dynamic, meaning that you can have some fun with it, even though that is not the tire’s primary goal. Winter performance is limited, like with most all-season tires, but it’s not too bad.
Refinement is another aspect of the Premier LTX that is premium. The comfortable ride combined with the low noise levels makes this tire an excellent option if you want to add a more luxurious driving feel.
Warranty and price are the areas where the tire disappoints a little. Even though the treadwear warranty isn’t bad, it’s shorter than most of its competitors. On top of that, the Premier LTX is on the higher end of the price scale.
Overall, the Premier LTX is a perfect tire for any crossover or SUV owner looking for a premium option. As long as you don’t have a problem with the shorter warranty and higher price point, I see no reason why you shouldn’t get it.
