Firestone updated its Transforce AT tires in 2017 by launching the Transforce AT 2- a tire built to carry out heavy duties more efficiently. The AT 2 is compatible with vans, light trucks, and medium-duty trucks to help them tackle almost any terrain- from mud, uneven construction sites, and slushy wet roads to even snow and ice!

Speaking of highway duties, the Firestone Transforce AT2 performs well on highways too while keeping the vehicle’s occupants comfortable- thanks to its two-ply casing that offers greater comfort. Strength and durability have also been upgraded on the tire as twin belts made from high-tensile steel are reinforced with spirally wrapped Nylon.

What are the features of the Firestone Transforce AT2?

The AT2 comes with quite a lot of kit. A chip and tear-resistant tread compound helps users drive over rocks and gravel. Punctures from sharp stones are mostly unheard of on the Transforce AT2.

Firestone Transforce AT 2 Tire Review

Compared to the previous model, the AT2 has deeper treads this time so when the going gets tough on uneven, snowy, or muddy terrain, the tires dig in deeper. This helps maintain momentum. In addition, the tread design is such that it helps in water shedding. This has drastically improved wet weather performance over the previous model.

Added durability to the tire has made it stronger than before, a point that instills more confidence in the driver. The AT2 is literally a go-anywhere tire that can help navigate compatible vehicles in tricky and challenging terrain. An increased tread-to-road footprint has improved traction on the Transforce AT2, helping it tick almost all of the boxes that users usually look for.

How does the Transforce AT2 behave on dry tarmac?

Firestone has gone a step ahead to improve the traction on it’s AT model. The improvisation is seen quite clearly in the AT2. On dry tarmac, the Transforce AT2 does very well. It offers enough grip to maneuver confidently at safe speeds. More grip also means improved braking distances.

One can cruise quite effortlessly and comfortably on the highway since the tires stick to the road, even at decent speeds. The AT2has a certain characteristic to it that makes it behave a little like a road tire, despite its off-road capabilities.

The tread-to-road footprint is commendable and aids in offering more traction, even when the tread has undergone considerable wear and tear. This is a great advantage since many tire models in the same segment begin to lose traction when the tread crosses the middle age mark.

How is the Transforce AT2 on wet and slippery roads?

The wet performance of the AT2 is at par with its dry performance. Large circumferential channels on the tire act as a passage for the water to seep out instead of sticking onto the tread. This prevents the chances of hydroplaning by a large margin, even under heavy rain/ flood conditions.

Many owners have reported that they’re pretty happy with the Transforce AT2’s performance during winters. The tire has proven to take on slippery, wet, and muddy surfaces with relative ease. We’d reckon that this tire should be able to get someone out of a sticky, slushy situation without much struggle.

How is the Firestone Transforce AT2 on snowy roads?

Being an AT tire, the Transforce AT2’s snow performance is impressive too. Deeper tread depth and added sipes not only help in wet conditions but also prevent the vehicle from getting stuck in snow. The new tread design helps the tire to dig and claw through the snow while the circumferential channels ensure snow and water flow out smoothly.

Is the Firestone Transforce AT2 good for driving off-road?

Absolutely! The Transforce AT2 comes with all the required muscle to make it a great off-road tire. One can treat this as a go-anywhere tire since the AT2 has surprised many with its off-roading capabilities. To begin with, the Independent tread block design and open shoulders offer a great deal of traction on sand, mud, and rocky terrain.

A deep tread pattern and a unique tread design help the Transforce AT2 tackle the wrath of elements like gravel, rocks, pavements, and other obstacles. Aggressive tread lugs on the shoulder help the tire dig into loose sand and mud.

One important aspect of the AT2 is its toughness. A chip and tear-resistant compound protects the tire from sharp stones and gravel. To compliment that, twin belts made from high-tensile steel are reinforced into the tire, wrapped spirally with nylon to make the tire as strong as possible.

Is the Firestone Transforce AT2 good for Sporty Driving?

We would definitely not recommend the Transforce AT2 for sporty driving for multiple reasons. The tire has a high profile characteristic meant for large vehicles that have a high center of gravity. It is designed to carry a heavy load on uneven terrain.

The tread compound and design will not offer the required grip to corner at brake at high speeds since they are engineered and made for purposes like off-roading, hauling trailers and snow driving. Naturally, the same design cannot offer traction and stability at high speeds.

Indulging in ‘sporty driving’ with acts of high-speed cornering and braking can cause a great amount of stress to the tire. This could result in a sudden loss of traction.

Is the Transforce AT2 comfortable and refined?

The new tread design on the AT2 not only offers advantages off the road but is also engineered in a way to improve passenger comfort.

A two-ply casing helps absorb jolts and vibrations from the road without passing them into the cabin. One cannot expect the comfort that a touring tire would offer. However, one could expect a decent ride quality which is quite uncommon in all-terrain tires.

Should I buy the Firestone Transforce AT2?

If you’re someone who owns a van or a medium-sized truck that frequents challenging terrain, the AT2 has already ticked one box for you. The tire is of great use to someone whose daily work involves navigating through rocky, sandy, slushy, or snowy terrain.

All-terrain tires offer different permutations and combinations in terms of features. Some offer great off-road capabilities with comfort but perform quite poorly under wet conditions. On the other hand, there are AT tires that are excellent off-road but are terrible in terms of comfort and road noise.

The Firestone Transforce AT2 is a tire that offers a great off-road package, performs flawlessly as a winter tire, and offers great traction whilst keeping its occupants comfortable. However, the road noise dampening on the AT2 is average so one could hear quite a bit of road noise on tarmac. Also, many consumers have complained about the tread wearing out earlier than expected so that is definitely another point to watch out for.

If you could compromise a bit of road noise and tread mileage for the other features the tire has to offer, then we’d highly recommend you to go for the AT2.

Firestone Transforce AT2 Warranty

Firestone does not offer a warranty on the number of miles covered since the tire is meant for off-road use. Tread uniformity is guaranteed for the first 1/32 inch of wear. Materials and workmanship are warranted for five years.

The Firestone website mentions a 90 day buy and try option for its customers but we’re sure it would be conditional. Many claims mention that the AT2 would be able to last for 55,000 miles.

Pricing- Is it worth the money?

Firestone Transforce AT2 is priced at $199 as per the official website. We think the pricing is average. At this price point, there are several other tires that could be available to consider. However, one must see if they offer more than what the Transforce AT2 offers.

Conclusion

To sum it up, the Firestone Transforce AT2 is a go-anywhere all-rounder tire that performs all duties without any hiccups- be it off-road or on-road. It is also great at hauling a heavy load. Considering the features, price, and the competitive tire market, we must say that the AT2 is a very interesting package in the form of a tire. If you’re someone not too keen on treadwear or road noise but are looking for a tire that does all the hard and dirty work for you, then look no further.
