In this part of the automotive industry, I often mention that the common types of tires on the market are touring ones. The blend of performance, refinement, and longevity makes them the perfect option for people looking for daily driving tires. Enthusiasts, on the other hand, want something different.
Performance tires are the thing that gets them excited, and with good reason. The overall dynamics and higher performance levels are why you and I would look at these kinds of tires. We know which are the best models in this category at the moment, but where does that leave the rest?
There are plenty of options in the performance segment, including a few tires from Yokohama. The model I have in mind for today is the ADVAN Sport A/S+, which promises a lot in theory.
Pros
- Long treadwear warranty
- Very comfortable and quiet
- Handles well and is very responsive
- Priced in the middle of the mid-range segment
Cons
- Overall grip and traction levels are behind its premium rivals
- There is a noticeable tone when you hit a pothole
The Features of the Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+
People who buy a performance tire expect a model with all the necessary features to deliver on its promises. Luckily, the ADVAN Sport A/S+ isn’t lacking, at least on paper.
The tire’s all-season properties come from Yokohama’s HS-2 rubber compound. It’s designed to help the tire with performance on wet roads, as well as colder temperatures. In addition to that, it should aid it with its longevity.
Another crucial aspect of the performance is the tread pattern. The tire features Z grooves and wave-like sipes designed to improve traction. Notably, the manufacturer claims these should help with damp or snow-covered roads.
As a performance tire, there are a few features to back that up. The large shoulder blocks are designed to help it with the cornering grip. There’s also the sidewall construction, which should prevent it from flexing and offer dynamic handling without making it uncomfortable.
Like many tires from Yokohama, there is a little something for the refinement. The tire’s tread design features a four-pitch variation to minimize road noise.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ in Dry Conditions
UHP tires are designed for anything from daily driving to having fun, and I feel like the ADVAN Sport A/S+ delivers in most cases.
I have no complaints about this tire under normal driving conditions. The performance levels are a lot higher than what you’d need for driving around town or on the highway, so you won’t find it lacking in this regard. Pushing it on a twisty road is something you can do, but not as much as some of its rivals. While the grip and traction levels will have your back, you can push it past its limits and overwhelm it, especially in the corners. This results in understeer, meaning I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re a regular at your local track.
The good news is that the handling is very dynamic and the tire responds quickly to inputs. With that said, the feedback needs a bit more work, as it’s a bit vague.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ on Wet or Slippery Roads
I feel like the wet performance is very similar to the dry, at least regarding the capabilities of the ADVAN Sport A/S+.
The tire’s grip and traction levels on damp roads are pretty good as long as you treat it like a daily driving tire. It can accelerate, corner, and brake easily, and not many people will find any issues with this kind of performance. Unfortunately, despite being a UHP tire, it’s not one that you’ll have a lot of fun pushing hard on a twisty road or on the track. The performance is there, and you can get a bit aggressive, but it will turn into understeer at a certain point. Luckily, it remains easy to handle and is very predictable in these situations. In these conditions, it does better than the Extensa HP II.
As far as the aquaplaning resistance is concerned, it’s good, but it feels limited. Even though it evacuates water well, the tire is behind its premium rivals.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ in Snow
Winter performance is something that all-season tires do acceptably well, and I can say the same about the ADVAN Sport A/S+.
The tire’s performance in snowy conditions is acceptable as long as you need it for regular driving. It can handle lighter conditions better than many mid-range models, meaning the grip and traction levels aren’t unsafe. The braking distances are longer than the premium tires, but still safe enough in this category. You can use it in these conditions, but you should rely on it for anything harsher.
Speaking of harsher, performance on ice is not something I’d call good. The acceptable performance should be enough only if you need to drive in these conditions. With limited traction and longer braking distances, I wouldn’t rely on this tire too much.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ Off-Roading
When it comes to the ADVAN Sport A/S+ and off-roading, the answer is simple – don’t do it. It’s a model for passenger cars, so a vehicle that’s not designed for those conditions is the first limitation. The second one is the performance and durability. We’re not talking about an all-terrain or a mud-terrain tire, so anything more than a short trip on a dirt road can be a problem.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ for Sporty Driving
Yokohama advertises the ADVAN Sport A/S+ as a UHP tire, so you’d expect a sporty model. In this regard, I’d call it a good sporty tire, but not an excellent one. The handling is pretty good and responsive, but the lack of feedback takes a few points off. In addition to that, the performance isn’t the best, especially when compared to something like the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus.
Does the Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ Ride Comfortably?
One thing the ADVAN Sport A/S+ does well as a UHP tire is refinement. You probably wouldn’t compare it to something from the grand touring segment, but in this one I rank it pretty high.
It’s a comfortable tire, and despite the sidewall construction making it responsive, it’s not overly firm. It can absorb bumps and iron out smaller imperfections well. In some cases, it may feel a bit too soft, but I wouldn’t call it a bad thing. It depends on the type of vehicle, but some owners may find this to be an advantage.
The noise levels are excellent, making this a very quiet tire. It hums like you’d expect, but it’s not a loud tone and not one that will dominate over everything else in the cabin. My only complaint is a particular note when you hit a pothole. You won’t notice it every time, but it’s there.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ Warranty
Getting a UHP tire with a 55,000-mile treadwear warranty makes the ADVAN Sport A/S+ a serious contender in this segment. As a comparison, the Potenza RE980AS+ or the Pilot Sport All Season 4 have less.
Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+ Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
Another area where the ADVAN Sport A/S+ seems to do well is the competitive pricing. An 18-inch model is priced similarly to the Hypertrac All Season but above the Zeon RS3-G1.
Should I Buy the Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+?
The ADVAN Sport A/S+ is one of those tires that’s not perfect, but the package offers things that some people will like.
If you’re looking for performance, this isn’t the best option. The tire does a pretty decent job in dry and wet, but doesn’t excel in either. It’s the same with the winter performance, which I’d call usable. The overall performance is behind the premium tires, and you should be aware of that.
On the other hand, you are getting a well-refined tire with a pretty long treadwear warranty at a competitive price. Not a lot of tires in this segment can achieve that.
The ADVAN Sport A/S+ is a tire that I’d recommend to people who prefer refinement over performance, but are still after a tire from this category.
