Regardless of which reason stands behind your decision to own an SUV or a truck, it’s essential to fit tires for the conditions you plan to use it.
In most cases, people go for touring tires because they offer a comfortable ride which compliments an SUV’s suspension. On the other hand, some people use these vehicles for off-roading, meaning that a proper off-road tire is needed.
When it comes to off-road tires, for the most part, you are looking at two types: all-terrain and mud-terrain. The first group of tires offers a great balance between driving on paved roads and off-roading. For people that want the full-on off-road experience, mud-terrain tires are the way to go.
Maxxis is a Taiwanese company that’s been around for over 50 years. Even though it started with bicycle tires, the company expanded into the car industry, putting the brand into the mid-range section. Excellent performance at a tad lower cost is a good balance that most people want.
The company has a tire for every occasion, and as you may have guessed, today’s review will be about a mud-terrain tire – the Razr MT.
What are the features of the Maxxis Razr MT?
Maxxis advertises the Razr MT as its flagship mud-terrain tire, meaning that the tire has plenty of features that enable it to perform well.
Considering that the Razr MT is a proper off-road tire, the main thing that sets it apart from the rest of the tires is its durability. The tire’s internal construction features a casing with dual cords that are intertwined with fibers for reinforcement. This should give the tire the required toughness even when deflated in rock-crawling situations.
In terms of durability and toughness, another area the company paid attention to is the sidewall. To avoid punctures and chips, the Razr MT has a reinforced sidewall for the most extreme situations. This is backed by Maxxis’ unique rubber compound with chemical filters that aim to increase longevity and increase puncture resistance.
Another area the sidewall helps is with traction. In off-road scenarios, you need all the traction you can get, so the Razr MT has ridges on the sidewall. The goal is to help the tire increase the traction in mud or sand and should be usable in snowy conditions.
Despite being an off-road tire, the Razr MT features specially designed center blocks which Maxxis claims should help provide a quieter driving experience.
How does it behave on dry tarmac?
For an off-road tire, the Razr MT isn’t too bad on dry roads. Despite not being designed for the road, the tire behaves decently and offers good performance.
Traction is surprisingly good, and the tire won’t struggle too much to find it. Powerful trucks or aggressive drivers won’t feel like they need more. The levels of grip are passable, so the Razr MT isn’t a tire that you should chug into a corner really hard. Stability on the highway is decently good, and as long as you don’t go over the speed limits, there shouldn’t be any issues.
In the handling department, you have a tire that will respond well enough but not enough to satisfy the enthusiast in you. The sidewall will flex if you overdo it, and you won’t feel too much through the steering wheel. Then again, it’s not a tire made for that kind of driving, so it’s not a major downside.
How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?
The Razr MT meets wet conditions with joy and deals with them pretty well. I wouldn’t compare it with the best wet performers out there, but there should be plenty of performance for everyday driving.
Traction is decent, and the tire can bite in and put the power down. Sure, it will slip if you put your foot down, so I’d advise you to be civilized. The area that performs the best is the aquaplaning resistance. The Razr MT can evacuate water thanks to the massive grooves and remain stable.
With this tire, you should also expect decent braking distances, well within the safe mark.
How is it over snow?
I think that the most disappointing aspect of the tire is the snow performance. Unlike some of its competitors, the Razr MT has an M+S rating, not 3PMSF, so it can struggle in the winter.
Even though it fairs a bit better in deeper snow than touring tires, it will have problems with deeper snow. In addition to that, traction and grip aren’t too impressive. You can drive it, but you will need to be gentle with it and not treat it like a proper winter tire. This also results in not the best braking distances.
The poor performance continues on ice as the tire doesn’t seem to have good enough traction to recommend driving it in those conditions.
Is it comfortable and refined?
Off-road tires are known for the lack of refinement, which isn’t the case with the Razr MT.
Comfort levels are decent, and you won’t feel too many road imperfections in the cabin. Despite being an off-road tire, it handles bumps and holes decently well, meaning that the ride comfort isn’t too compromised.
Maxxis’ design seemed to do its job, and the tire is acceptable in terms of noise levels. Yes, the noise is there, especially on the highway, but it’s not as bad as with some of the other mud-terrain tires on the market.
Is it good for off-roading?
Yes, and the Razr MT does off-roading very well.
In lighter situations like dirt roads, the tire exhibits confident handling, and the rubber feels like it’s impossible to damage. Mud and sand are also conditions where the tire will have no problem delivering performance. Thanks to the self-cleaning pattern, you will be sure that the grooves remain clear and provide maximum traction.
Drop the pressure, and you can take the tire rock-crawling and will ask for more. Even in situations when it feels squished to a point where it will show weakness, the tire remains solid and continues driving.
Is the Maxxis Razr MT ideal for sporty driving?
I’ll be short – no, the Razr MT isn’t a tire ideal for sporty driving. The thick sidewall, combined with the not-so-responsive steering and a bit muted feedback, the tire won’t provide the driving experience that you’d want. In addition to that, the grip and traction are not on the levels that an enthusiast would like them to be.
Maxxis Razr MT Warranty
Off-road tires generally have no warranty due to the conditions they’ll be driven on, which isn’t the case with the Razr MT. The tire was a 40,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is a welcomed surprise. As a comparison, tires like the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R or BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 have no warranty.
Maxxis Razr MT Pricing: Is it worth the money?
As an overall package, the Razr MT is an excellent bargain, even though it’s not a cheaper option. The prices start from around $260, which isn’t more affordable than the premium competition. The Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 goes for roughly the same price.
Should I buy the Maxxis Razr MT?
Yes, you should buy the Razr MT, as long as you need a tire capable of delivering performance in the most extreme off-road scenarios.
Even though a tire like the Razr MT is designed for off-road, it can be used on paved roads. The performance is decent, and you probably won’t ask for more. Acceptable levels of grip and traction in dry and wet conditions, combined with a decently comfortable and quiet ride, are not a bad combination. Winter performance takes a hit, and, in these cases, I feel like Maxxis could have done more.
Off-road is where the tire feels at home and will have no problem performing like a champ in all conditions. Regardless if it’s gravel, mud, or sand, the Razr MT will have plenty of traction to get you out of trouble. Deflate it, and you have an excellent rock-crawler that will take tons of abuse and survive.
Based on the 40,000-mile treadwear warranty, the Razr MT is a bit of a unicorn in this segment compared with other models with no warranty.
If you’re okay with the premium price tag and don’t need a tire with excellent winter performance, the Razr MT is one of the best mud-terrain choices on the market.
