If you look at some statistics from the tire industry, you’ll notice a certain trend regarding which tires are the most popular ones. A good amount of people would go for an all-season touring tire because those tires cover most of the needs.

Most of us drive our cars around town or on the highway on the weekend, so we’re looking for dependable performance, refinement, and longevity. All of these features can be found in touring tires, which is why they are so popular.

Essentially, there are 3 main categories in the tire industry – premium, mid-range, and cheap manufacturers. Considering that the cheap brands are the ones I recommend avoiding, today’s review will cover the mid-range ones.

There are plenty of manufacturers to choose from, and a name that often gets mentioned is Nexen. The company has a plethora of options, and the one I’ve chosen for today is the N Priz AH5 – a standard touring all-season tire.

What are the features of the Nexen N Priz AH5?

Considering that the N Priz AH5 is an affordable option, you shouldn’t expect some industry-leading features. Despite that, Nexen implemented as much as possible to ensure that the tire performs well.

Nexen N Priz AH5 Tire Review

The all-season part of the performance is backed by Nexen’s special rubber compound. Like with most all-season tires, this type of compound should help keep the tire performing even when the surface temperatures drop.

Even though we are talking about a touring tire, Nexen tried to make the N Priz AH5 one that can handle well. This area of the tire should be backed by the shoulder blocks, which are designed to be stiffer, something that usually helps with responsiveness.

For wet performance, the N Priz AH5 has two sides that should help it perform well. In damp conditions, you have the tread pattern designed to deliver traction when the roads are slippery. For the heavy rain conditions, Nexen designed the tire with 4 wide circumferential grooves that should help keep it stable at higher speeds.

A touring tire isn’t a touring tire if it’s not longer-lasting or well refined. To cover the longevity, Nexen went with the dual kerf design, while the overall tread pattern should help it keep the noise levels down.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

The N Priz AH5 is a budget-oriented tire, and as such, it delivers very decent results. Don’t expect it to be comparable to the premium tires out there, but as a mid-range option, it’s not all that bad.

Daily driving is what the N Priz AH5 is designed to do, and it does that with decent levels of performance. Accelerating won’t be an issue for most cases, as the traction levels are good enough to eliminate slip. To be fair, it doesn’t take much to get the tire to slip, but you’ll be fine under normal conditions. Things are more or less similar in the corners, and the levels of grip will enable you to drive without worrying about understeer or oversteer.

While the N Priz AH5 is a good choice for normal driving, it’s not one that you can push hard. The levels aren’t too high, and the tire won’t handle a lot of torture. I feel that the biggest issue with it is that it can overheat quite quickly, and once that happens, the performance levels drop even more significantly.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

Moving on to the wet performance, the N Priz AH5 does what it’s designed to do. Like in dry conditions, the performance levels will be good for daily driving, which should be fine for most people.

Similar to how the N Priz AH5 behaved in dry conditions, you can expect it to do in damp ones. The traction is good enough to eliminate slip if you don’t have a heavy foot, so you can accelerate without too much fuss. Going into a corner will require some caution as the grip levels aren’t on the same levels as the CrossClimate 2. You won’t get a lot of understeer, but you’ll need to be wary of the tire’s performance levels.

An area of the N Priz AH5 that surprised me is the aquaplaning resistance. Nexen’s wide circumferential and lateral grooves are designed to evacuate larger amounts of water, making the tire very stable and planted. Another aspect that surprised me is the braking distances, which may not compete with the premium tires, but are fairly short when compared to the mid-range ones.

How is it over snow?

All-season tires have limited performance in snowy conditions, and the N Priz AH5 is no exception. I would classify it as usable, and that’s as much as you’ll get from it.

The colder temperatures aren’t crippling for the performance, and the N Priz AH5 won’t struggle too much to put the power down. On clear roads, the grip and traction levels are decent, and you probably won’t need to think about a winter tire.

In snowy conditions, things are usable, but not in all conditions. If the snow is unpacked and only an inch deep, then the N Priz AH5 can be categorized as usable. It can get the car going and go around a corner without feeling like you’re out of control. Driving over packed snow can be a bit troublesome, but you can use it even in those conditions.

Going for anything more than that and you’ll notice that the N Priz AH5 isn’t a replacement for a proper winter tire. It won’t take much to get stuck in deeper snow, and ice should be avoided altogether.

Is it comfortable and refined?

Mid-range tires aren’t known for being the best in terms of refinement, but the N Priz AH5 surprised me, as I didn’t have very high hopes.

The N Priz AH5 is a tire that won’t produce a lot of noise, so it ticks that box in the list of touring tire requirements. Around town, the noise levels are pretty low, and even over rougher roads, there won’t be a lot of roar. On the highway, things remain relatively quiet, and even though the Turanza QuietTrack is noticeably quieter, as a mid-range tire, this one is pretty good.

Comfort is another area where the N Priz AH5 seems to be going pretty well. The tire won’t have any issues with smaller imperfections and will smooth them out without any issues. Going over larger potholes is where you’ll notice that it isn’t a premium tire. While it will soften the blow, part of the vibrations will be transferred into the cabin. The good news is that they will be muted.

Is the Nexen N Priz AH5 ideal for sporty driving?

If you look at both perspectives individually, it may seem like the N Priz AH5 could be a good candidate. Unfortunately, as a package, the tire won’t deliver on this front.

The biggest problem is that the tire doesn’t have very high levels of performance to be driven aggressively. It may be fine for daily driving, but if you begin to push it, you’ll have a tire with degrading performance.

On the handling side of things, I have to say that the N Priz AH5 surprised me a bit. It offers decent handling, and even though it’s nowhere near the SportContact 7, as a mid-range touring tire, I have to say that it’s not the worst. Things are good in the feedback section, as it’s not the most muted tire in the world.

Nexen N Priz AH5 Warranty

Warranty is an area of the N Priz AH5 that isn’t overly impressive. Nexen offers the tire with a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is far behind what the premium manufacturers are offering. Even tires like the Tiger Paw Touring A/S come with a longer warranty.

Nexen N Priz AH5 Pricing: Is it worth the money?

Considering everything the N Priz AH5 offers, the price isn’t terrible. It’s priced similar to the Hankook Kinergy ST and cheaper than the CS5 Grand Touring, both of which are this tire’s direct competitors.

Should I buy the Nexen N Priz AH5?

If you’re after a decent tire on a budget, then the N Priz AH5 is one of several options you should consider. When you’re going for the mid-range options, you should be aware that you will need to make some compromises.

The N Priz AH5 is not a bad tire for daily driving, as it can deliver decent performance levels. Under normal driving conditions, the dry and wet performance will cover most people’s needs.

You also have some slight drawbacks, like the limited snow performance or the below-average treadwear warranty. With that said, the N Priz AH5 is relatively affordable, so it balances things out.

Don’t get me wrong, the N Priz AH5 is far from the perfect tire, but considering the package and the price tag attached to it, it’s not the worst investment.
