As mentioned in the beginning, the Kanati Trail Hog is an all-season all-terrain tire designed to cope with a variety of different situations. As such, the Trail Hog tire is 3PMSF-rated which means that it bests all regular S+M tires when it comes to snow and ice driving. A 3PMSF-rated tire offers both more traction and is able to withstand lower temperatures without suffering in performance.

The Kanati Trail Hog offers an aggressive tread pattern, but one that is designed to clean itself while driving which means that this design makes sure traction is ever-present, no matter the conditions. The Trail Hog also utilizes a 3-ply sidewall construction which makes the tire a lot more durable and able to last a long time without being punctured.

On the other hand, Kanati was also adamant in making the tire quiet and comfortable by utilizing a variable pitch technology within the tread that ultimately makes the tire quieter at higher speeds. As far as off-roading is concerned, the Trail Hog tire is designed to maintain its shape no matter the obstacle which means that the tire does not twitch.

What Kanati said the Trail Hog would do, it seems like the Trail Hog does as it is a well-rounded tire that does not cost a lot of money. Even so, is the Trail Hog made by a relatively unfamiliar brand able to compete with a brand like Goodyear?

Off-road Performance: Kanati Trail Hog Vs Goodyear Duratrac

The Kanati Trail Hog is an off-road tire through and through which means that the most of development costs have probably gone into making the Trail Hog shine off-road. The Trail Hogs are more than capable of doing light and mediocre off-roading while mud and rock climbing do pose a bigger challenge, but the Trail Hog is able to do it as well.

On the other hand, the Goodyear Duratrac tire is also able to easily cope with mild and mediocre off-roading, while the heavy stuff is not as promising as in the Kanati Trail Hog. On-road driving is arguably the more important aspect of an all-terrain tire as most trucks and SUVs that use them spend the majority of their lifetime on the road. As such, Kanati tried to make the Trail Hog benefit from its biting edges both off and on-road. However, the Hogs are only able to offer decent performance, nothing more, nothing less.

As far as dry conditions are concerned, the Hogs are able to maintain traction, but only when you push them hard enough, they break traction. Handling and responsiveness are relatively good, but nowhere near what some all-terrain tires can do.

This is where the Goodyear Duratrac tires shine as they are more or less identical with both lighter and heavier trucks. The Duratrac tire distributes the weight better than the majority of all-terrain tires out there which means that stability, handling, and responsiveness are great in the dry.

When it comes to wet conditions, the tread design on the Duratrac tire can maintain high levels of traction, and that is why it easily wins in this instance.

Goodyear spends exorbitant amounts of money on research and development in order to make their tires competitive in each segment. The Goodyear Duratrac on the other hand are 3PMSF-rated, but only specific models such as the ones designed specifically for the Wrangler. This means that the base level Duratrac is not 3PMSF-rated and that is why the Trail Hog wins in this instance with ease. It’s also worth mentioning that the Duratrac tire is also compatible with #16 studs.

  1. This is a well written and thought out comparison. It should have mentioned the availability of sizes between the two. Since both have a great range of sizes it is worth noting the trail hog is available in a 37 inch tire but the duratrac only offers up to a 35 inch tire. Bothe have 16, 17, 18, and 20 inch wheels.
