In the automotive world, vehicle and tier manufacturers often work together to ensure that we, as customers, get the best possible package. Car manufacturers usually lead the trends, with the tire manufacturers following closely.
A good example of this is electric vehicles. Car manufacturers have been trying to improve EVs, which they seem to have achieved in the past few years. Sure, there are a lot of drawbacks, but they’re slowly becoming a thing of the past. Like with most trends, the tire industry is following closely, offering tires designed for these kinds of vehicles.
For the most part, the “regular” tires were fine, but tire manufacturers needed to get creative with the accelerated wear and a few other issues. This resulted in tires designed specifically for EVs. They are based on the regular models, with a few improvements to cover the electric segment.
Take Bridgestone, for example. The company’s Turanza lineup with the QuietTrack has been one of the best options in the grand touring segment. Last year, the company released the Turanza EV as an option for EV owners, using new technologies, which should help deliver on its promises.
Pros
- Very comfortable and quiet
- Snow performance is excellent for an all-season model
- The overall performance is more than enough for most people
- Athletic and easy to control even on the limit
Cons
- Dry and wet performance are marginally behind some of its rivals
- Doesn’t offer the lowest rolling resistance in this category
The Features of the Bridgestone Turanza EV
The Turanza EV is a new tire, meaning that among the expected features, there are a few new technologies.
Bridgestone incorporated its INLITEN technology, making this the first tire to utilize it. It aims to help the tire perform in multiple conditions, especially in winter and wet weather. In addition to that, it should offer a long tread life, at least when compared to other EV tires.
The rubber compound features Bridgestone’s PeakLife Polymer, and based on the name, you can probably guess where this is going. It creates bonds between the polymer and additional particles, which should help the tire last longer.
Since it’s a Turanza tire, it’s designed with the QuietTrack technology. Based on this and my previous experience with the Turanza QuietTrack, I’m guessing the noise levels will be pretty low, which is essential with any EV.
The compound and the tread pattern featuring full-depth 3D sipes, circumferential grooves, and open shoulder slots should help with traction in non-ideal conditions. Specifically, wet and snow.
Bridgestone Turanza EV in Dry Conditions
As a grand touring tire, the Turanza EV offers all the performance you’d need for daily driving your EV.
Under normal conditions, the instant torque won’t be a problem, thanks to the level of traction this tire offers. The grip levels are also pretty good, meaning it can go around corners without issues. When it comes to the braking distances, I’d say that they are short and safe, which is important. With that said, they are longer than some of its competitors.
Being behind seems to be a drawback with this tire. I’m not saying it’s a terrible performer, but the overall levels are behind some EV models from the grand touring segment.
In the handling department, the tire performs just as you’d expect a tire from this category to do. The responsiveness is pretty good, and even though it’s not the best in this class, I’d still rank it high. In addition, it provides enough information and is quite precise.
Bridgestone Turanza EV on Wet or Slippery Roads
In wet conditions, the Turanza EV continues to deliver excellent performance, which you’d expect from a premium model.
The grip and traction levels are more than enough for most people for daily driving situations on damp roads. It will handle the instant torque and as long as you’re not flooring it at every stoplight, the slip will be kept at a minimum. Cornering is also not a massive issue, and the often anticipated understeer isn’t too noticeable.
While it sounds like an excellent performer, the tire will begin to struggle a bit when you push it. The combination of aggressiveness and your EV’s power will cause the tire to slip. To be fair, most of its rivals will let go in these conditions, but this one seems to do that a bit sooner. On a positive note, it remains well-balanced and easy to handle when you’re at the limit.
Thanks to Bridgestone’s tread pattern, the tire’s water evacuation properties are pretty good. As a result, you’ll have excellent stability in harsh rain.
Bridgestone Turanza EV in Snow
You’re looking at all-season tires if you want some performance in winter conditions. In this regard, the Turanza EV does a pretty good job.
The tire’s traction levels are pretty good, meaning it does a good job of accelerating or braking in these conditions. It’s a similar experience on packed snow, meaning that it does a better job than many of its rivals. The best part is that even though the handling is light, it’s not unpredictable, at least as long as you remain within the limits.
Even though you probably won’t be driving it on ice, I have to say that there is some traction. It’s far from a proper winter tire, but I’d consider it usable enough in a pinch. With this in mind, asking for anything more in harsher conditions is a bad idea, as the tire isn’t designed to cope with that.
Bridgestone Turanza EV Off-Roading
The Turanza EV is a grand touring tire, meaning it’s designed for road use. As a result, it won’t be able to perform well in off-road conditions. Combining the lack of performance and the fact that the compound isn’t capable of taking that much beating, I’d advise you against driving it in those conditions.
Bridgestone Turanza EV for Sporty Driving
Generally speaking, grand touring tires aren’t the best option when it comes to sporty driving. With that said, they’re not a terrible choice if you’re a spirited driver. It’s the same with the Turanza EV. The tire offers enough performance to push it on a twisty road, and when you combine it with the handling, you won’t be terribly disappointed.
Does the Bridgestone Turanza EV Ride Comfortably?
Refinement is crucial with any EV tire, and I’m happy to report that the Turanza EV delivers in both aspects.
Thanks to the QuietTrack technology, the tire’s noise levels are among the lowest in this category. The lack of engine noises means there are some noticeable notes, but they are generally low.
The comfort levels are also very good. It irons out smaller road imperfections, providing you with a plush experience. With larger bumps or potholes, the initial hit is well-dampened, and when you combine that with its ability to absorb vibrations, you can understand why it’s among the best.
Bridgestone Turanza EV Warranty
It’s no secret that EV tires don’t last as long as regular ones, and it shows. The treadwear warranty of the Turanza EV is 50,000 miles, which is pretty good. For comparison, the ElectricDrive 2 has 45,000 miles.
Bridgestone Turanza EV Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
Bridgestone’s latest and greatest tire isn’t the most affordable one, and it is to be expected. The Turanza EV is a bit more expensive than its rival from Goodyear. With that said, the price isn’t that much higher than Michelin’s flagship grand touring model.
Should I Buy the Bridgestone Turanza EV?
Is the Turanza EV the absolute best? No. Does that mean that you should avoid it? No. Bridgestone has made an excellent tire, and despite not being perfect, it’s not a tire you should pass.
Yes, performance in dry and wet conditions isn’t the best in this class, but you won’t notice unless you plan on taking it on a track. One thing you will notice is that it offers pretty decent performance in winter conditions. The excellent refinement and long treadwear warranty for an EV complete the package. It is a bit more expensive than its direct rival, but it’s not a massive difference.
The Turanza EV is an excellent tire, and despite not being the perfect one, I’d say that it would be more than enough for anyone with an EV.
