Car and tire manufacturers work together to ensure the end product is as perfect as possible. To achieve this, tire manufacturers often follow the lead and produce tires, allowing vehicles to deliver on the promised performance.
Considering the popularity of all-season tires, it’s no wonder why we have so many models. There are many types of tires, with the touring ones being the most commonly purchased option.
In this part of the segment, there are tires made for larger vehicles like SUVs. Since it’s a common purchasing option for many people, tire manufacturers follow the trend and make tires for these vehicles. One such model comes from Cooper.
The Discoverer EnduraMax has been on the market for about 5 years, and it’s advertised as a model that offers performance, refinement, and longevity. Is this true, or are we looking at another mid-range model that needs much work?
Pros
Cons
The Features of the Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax
Cooper is known for packing as many features in its tires as possible, and the Discoverer EnduraMax is no exception.
One of the main features of this tire is that it’s made using the Durable-Tread technology. This should result in a long-lasting tire, thanks to the durable compound aimed at resisting daily wear.
Since it’s an all-season tire, there is a little something that can help in winter conditions. The Winter Grip technology adds “teeth” to the edges of the blocks, designed to bite into snow. As a 3PMSF-rated tire, we should see some solid winter performance.
The tire is backed by the Enduraguard design, a feature that helps it keep its shape when driving on rougher surfaces. In addition to that, the design is tweaked to ensure that the noise levels are on the lower end of the spectrum.
Even though it’s not an off-road capable tire, there is a feature that should help it in terms of durability. Backed by Cooper’s Armor Belt technology, it’s a tire that won’t have too many problems on rougher roads.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax in Dry Conditions
The performance from the Discoverer EnduraMax in dry conditions is pretty good, considering it’s a touring tire.
Touring tires are designed for daily driving, and this one does a very good job. The grip and traction levels are more than up for the task, providing a safe driving experience without any slip. Another safe aspect is the braking distances, which are on par with most of its mid-range rivals.
Since we’re not talking about a performance tire, you shouldn’t expect it to excel in aggressive scenarios. With that said, it can handle getting pushed a bit, and it won’t be the most boring tire. You can have some fun with it, but don’t expect it to perform on the same level as its premium rivals.
The handling is an aspect that adds to the fun factor, at least as much as it can. It’s quite responsive for a touring tire and light for daily driving. Enthusiasts looking for a very dynamic tire will be disappointed. With that said, as long as you keep your expectations real, you won’t feel too terrible about how it handles.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax on Wet or Slippery Roads
In wet conditions, the Discoverer EnduraMax delivers pretty good performance, but it’s far from the perfect tire.
The performance on damp roads is pretty respectable and one that will cover your needs quite nicely. It’s a well-behaved tire on the road, and as long as you’re not asking too much, it won’t have any issues. The braking distances aren’t overly impressive and fall behind the Geolandar CV G058. Despite that, they’re quite short.
Getting aggressive isn’t something that the tire likes. It’s not that it doesn’t like it, as much as it cannot deliver. The grip and traction levels are good up to a certain point, after which the tire will let go. Getting too carried away isn’t something you’ll want to do often with this tire.
On a positive note, I don’t have any complaints about the aquaplaning resistance. The tire’s stability is pretty good in harsh rain and will handle going over standing water without any issues.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax in Snow
The Discoverer EnduraMax comes with the 3PMSF rating, meaning you can expect better winter performance than many of its all-season rivals.
You’re looking at a model that will handle snow quite well and won’t struggle too much for traction. It deals with packed and unpacked snow better than many M+S-rated tires. When you combine this with the short braking distances, you’re getting a more usable model. It’s not a replacement for a proper winter tire, but it does very well in this category.
This tire will not do well on ice despite the good snow performance. There is enough traction to be called usable, but you’ll need to be gentle with the inputs.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax Off-Roading
Cooper implemented some features into the Discoverer EnduraMax to make it durable. Does this make it a good off-roading tire? No. It lacks the aggressive pattern to deliver good performance in these conditions. The tire will handle dirt roads or very shallow mud, and nothing more.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax for Sporty Driving
Considering that the Discoverer EnduraMax is a touring tire for SUVs, you probably should expect any sportiness from it. It handles aggressiveness a bit, and is dynamic enough considering the category. You probably won’t have a lot of fun on a track, but it can be acceptable on a twisty road.
Does the Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax Ride Comfortably?
Touring tires are all about refinement, but unfortunately, the Discoverer EnduraMax doesn’t do the most impressive job.
The comfort levels are pretty solid, allowing the tire to offer a decent driving experience. It’s a bit on the firmer side, so you will notice more of the bumps, but it’s not too firm to call it harsh. The tire absorbs bumps well and keeps the secondary motions to a minimum, so there’s almost no bounciness.
Noise is where I feel it falls short. Regardless of the speed, the tread produces some noises that aren’t as muted as I’d like them to be. I wouldn’t call it obnoxiously loud, but you will notice it. Things don’t improve much on rougher surfaces, which can be a problem for some on longer journeys.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax Warranty
Looking at the warranty, I feel like the Discoverer EnduraMax could’ve done better. It comes with a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is a bit behind some of its mid-range competitors. This also includes the slightly newer Cooper model, the Endeavour Plus.
Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax Pricing: Is It Worth the Price?
Regarding the price, there isn’t something spectacular about the Discoverer EnduraMax. It’s positioned in the middle of the mid-range segment, close to the Dynapro HP2 and a bit above the Crugen HP71.
Should I Buy the Cooper Discoverer EnduraMax?
Like with most of the tires in this category, the Discoverer EnduraMax isn’t perfect, but it’s not a tire that I’d say is bad.
The overall performance is pretty good; it will do a good job in dry and wet conditions for daily driving. It doesn’t handle aggressiveness on wet as well as its rivals, but it’s not unsafe. Winter performance is impressive, which should be a surprise from a tire with the 3PMSF rating.
It’s a decently priced tire with a treadwear warranty that I’d call average. My biggest complaint about this tire is the noise level. It’s far from a loud one, but it’s noticeable. The comfort is pretty good, and the tire remains composed even on bad roads.
The Discoverer EnduraMax is a tire that fails a bit in some areas, but that doesn’t mean it’s a poor performer. If you’re okay with the slightly higher noise levels and taking things easy in wet conditions, it’s a tire that you should be happy with.
