All-season grand touring tires are becoming a very popular trend these days. Having one set of tires you can use throughout the year is ideal for most drivers, as it saves money because you won’t need to buy two sets of tires. Even though all-season tires are not the best option for winter driving, some perform better than others.

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 is one of those tires, at least in theory. It is designed as “the best tire for all seasons” without compromising performance or comfort. That’s quite a bold claim, and today we’re going to see if Vredestein can deliver on it.

What are the features of the Vredestein Quatrac 5?

Most of the features of the Quatrac 5 revolve around the all-season performance. Vredestein developed a rubber compound with high silica concentration that should give it its all-season properties. The compound is molded into an asymmetric tread pattern with wider shoulder blocks and 3 circumferential grooves.

The result of all of this should be a very stable tire with decent handling performance on dry surfaces. For wet roads, even though it has less circumferential grooves than most of its competitors, the Quatrac 5 shouldn’t have a problem with that. The grooves work in combinations with the lateral grooves and sipes to evacuate water away from the tire and resist aquaplaning.

On the handling side of things, the broader shoulders should make the tire more stable at higher speeds and give it a bit more steering responsiveness.

Another area in the tire that should help with handling is the internal construction. The two steel belts support the polyester casing, which is additionally reinforced by using polyamide. Not only should this make the tire better handling, but it should also help keep it stable at higher speeds. Keep in mind that this is a standard construction of most all-season tires, so it’s not guaranteed that it will perform as well as Vredestein claims.

Snow performance should also be good, as the manufacturer claims. The Quatrac 5 has the 3PMSF rating, which means that it should be better than most all-season tires. In addition to that, the zig-zag tread pattern is designed to improve grip on slippery surfaces. Despite not being a proper winter tire, considering the claims, I’m expecting some decent performance on snow from this tire.

I usually don’t mention this as a feature, but in the Quatrac 5 I have to make an exception. With tire sizes ranging from 13 to 18 inches, the potential cars you can fit the tire to are endless.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

The Quatrac 5 performs quite well on dry tarmac, almost as good as some of the premium tires. As an all-season tire, it has excellent levels of traction and grip.

When you go into a corner, you won’t need to worry about overdoing it because the limits on this tire are pretty high. Enthusiasts may even find it fun to drive, thanks to the decent responsiveness and passable feedback. It won’t talk too much through the steering wheel but should be enough.

Traction is also not a limiting factor as the Quatrac 5 seems to stick to the road without any issues. Even aggressive acceleration is not a problem.

In terms of stopping, the braking distances are among the shortest ones in the category and may even overlap with the premium options.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

On wet and slippery roads, the Quatrac 5 is probably the best all-season performer in its class. Like on dry roads, the tire provided excellent results in terms of grip and driving dynamics.

The Quatrac 5 can hold you in place in the corners at higher speeds than you usually would drive on. The tire can lose grip, but when it does, it won’t catch you by surprise. Predicable and safe driving is what the tire is about. Plus, the braking distances are very short and one of the best I’ve experienced for the price.

Similar to before, traction is not an issue at all, even under aggressive acceleration. A slight downside is the aquaplaning resistance. Even though it’s pretty good and well above average for the class, it’s not the best.

How is it over snow?

As soon as it starts snowing, the Quatrac 5 shows that Vredestein made it very usable in those conditions. Even though it won’t outperform a snow tire, in light conditions is very usable. I’d say it’s near the top for winter driving when compared to other mid-tiered tires

The braking distances are decent and seem to be a tad longer than the class-leading options. Handling is exceptional, and despite the outstanding winter performance, the tire doesn’t drive like one.

Traction also won’t be an issue as the Quatrac 5 can bite down and get you moving. The same goes even for hard-packed snow, which is not very common with other models.

Is it comfortable and refined?

The Quatrac 5 is superb in terms of comfort, while the noise levels are not something to brag about.

Over any kind of road, the tire will offer a very comfortable driving experience. The combination of the tire absorbing the bums and the suspension doing its job almost has a premium-like feel to it.

Noise levels, on the other hand, are pretty high. It’s not the loudest tire I’ve tested, but it can get relatively intrusive. As the speed increases, so does the noise.

Is it good for off-roading?

Not really. After all, the Quatrac 5 isn’t designed as an off-road tire. Some short field trips on a dirt road should be fine, but you have to be careful. Rocks can damage the tire, which will lead to premature or uneven wear.

Is the Vredestein Quatrac 5 ideal for sporty driving?

The Quatrac 5 isn’t the best for sporty driving, but you can have some fun with it if you want to. You will be greeted with decent responsiveness and a good amount of feedback through the steering wheel. These, combined with the exceptional grip, can lead to some fun on a twisty road.

Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max Warranty

In terms of the warranty, things are a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the Quatrac 5 comes with a 5-year 45,000-mile treadwear warranty. This is a step down compared with the premium options but is still within the mid-range tier.

On top of that, there is also a 1-year unconditional warranty. It covers punctures that cannot be repaired or any kind of accidental damage.

Vredestein Quatrac 5 Pricing: Is it worth the money?

Yes, it is, and there aren’t too many tires that can offer this much performance for the price. The price range for the Quatrac 5 starts a little under $60 for the smallest 13 inch and ends at around $150 for the largest 18-inch model. It’s not the cheapest mid-range tire in the world, but it is cheaper than the premium ones.

Should I buy the Vredestein Quatrac 5?

There’s no denying that you should buy the Quatrac 5. The affordable price and excellent performance make it an excellent option for anyone looking to save a few bucks without sacrificing the tire’s capabilities.

For regular driving, the Quatrac 5 is more than enough for every driver on the plant. On top of that, a spirited driver may even find it fun to drive. Excellent grip in the corners and stability on the straights, combined with a dynamic driving feel, is something that some of us look forward to.

Wet performance is equally impressive with almost class-leading grip and traction. Aquaplaning resistance isn’t the best, but the tire is still very safe and confident.

The biggest surprise was when the Quatrac 5 got driven on snow. Even though it will struggle in some harsh conditions, light snow won’t be a problem at all. For harsher winters, I would recommend going for a winter tire.

The comfort and noise are on two different levels. On the one hand, the Quatrac 5 is a highly comfortable tire, regardless of the surface you’re diving on. Unfortunately, the noise levels are not as refined.

Warranty-wise, the Quatrac 5 is not the best there is. The 45,000-mile treadwear warranty lasts for 5 years, unlike the 6-year warranty with the premium models. The good thing is that you have a 1-year warranty that covers any kind of accidental damage to the tire.

It’s hard not to like the Quatrac 5. The tire isn’t perfect and has a few downsides, but overall, as a package, it’s an excellent option for anyone looking for a great all-season tire.
