Pros

  • Premium-like comfort levels
  • Excellent aquaplaning resistance
  • High levels of grip and traction for everyday driving
  • Priced lower than most of its competitors

Cons

  • Usable only on shallow unpacked snow
  • The handling in wet isn’t the best

In the tire industry, every manufacturer is known for something specific in terms of its products. For example, Continental is a brand known for making premium tires at a slightly lower price than its rivals. Also, most of the models in its lineup are excellent wet performers.

The tire industry isn’t just in the premium segment, as there are brands in the mid-range one. Take the small Finish company Nokian. Initially, the brand was known for making winter tires to combat the weather car owners face in those regions.

While Nokian makes pretty good winter tires, that’s not all the company has in store. Over the years, it widened its product lineup and included all-season tires as well, and the one I’ll be reviewing today falls in that category.

If you remember, I made a list of the best tires for gas mileage a while ago, where I outlined the eNTYRE 2.0. It’s an all-season touring tire, which Nokian designed to compete with the big players. With that said, is it any good, or should you look elsewhere?

What are the features of the Nokian eNTYRE 2.0?

In the features department, the eNTYRE 2.0 seems to cover all the aspects you’d want in a touring tire.

Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 Tire Review

Let’s start with the rubber compound, which covers several critical areas of the eNTYRE 2.0. The High Modulus part of it is designed to improve the handling without sacrificing performance. Also, thanks to the silica in the rubber, the tire’s performance over colder surfaces shouldn’t be poor.

Next up, we have Comfort Base, which is still part of the rubber compound. This technology is designed to make the eNTYRE 2.0 comfortable, so we should see some good results in that test. The bonus of this is that it helps the tire with heat build-up, meaning that overheating won’t be prominent. There should be two advantages to this – improved wear and fuel economy.

All-season tires are designed to be driven in wet conditions, and the eNTYRE 2.0 is no exception. Nokian designed it with fewer sipes than its predecessor but widened the circumferential and lateral grooves. The company claims that this approach should produce better-aquaplaning resistance. To further improve things, the company made the main grooves polished, intending to remove potential obstacles and keep the water flowing freely.

Nokian used two technologies for the noise levels – the silent sidewall and silent groove design. Both should work in combination and make the eNTYRE 2.0 quieter.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

In dry conditions, the eNTYRE 2.0 is a tire that can deliver good performance for what most people would need.

The eNTYRE 2.0 is a tire that delivers high levels of grip and comfort, as long as you’re not being overly aggressive. In a daily driving scenario, the tire will have no problems accelerating without any slip or go around a corner without promoting understeer. It may not sound like much, but regular drivers won’t need more, so I can fault it.

As a mid-range touring tire, the eNTYRE 2.0 isn’t one that can deliver very high levels of grip and traction, meaning that pushing it isn’t an option. The first issue you’ll face is understeer if you decide to go into a corner at a higher speed. Also, even though it’s designed to prevent itself from overheating, that’s for normal driving conditions. When you’re pushing it hard for longer, it will overheat, and the performance will be even worse.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

As far as wet conditions are concerned, the eNTYRE 2.0 is decent enough, but you will notice that it’s not a premium tire. It’s fine, but you may feel like you’d want more, especially if you’ve driven a premium tire.

The grip and traction levels are decent to give you a safe driving experience in normal conditions. You will notice the occasional slip when accelerating, but it’s not too terrible. Also, when you go into a corner, the eNTYRE 2.0 will be fine, as long as you’re not coming in too hot, in which case, you can expect a lot of understeer. I believe reducing the number of sipes is why we’re not seeing improved traction with the tire.

While the eNTYRE 2.0 may do fine with everyday driving, pushing isn’t something you should think of in wet conditions. As the limits aren’t as high as with something like the ExtremeContact DWS 06, it doesn’t take much for the tire to get twitchy.

One area where the eNTYRE 2.0 managed to deliver surprisingly great results is the aquaplaning resistance. The polished grooves seem to be doing an excellent job at evacuating water efficiently, and the tire remains stable at speeds higher than what you’d normally drive.

How is it over snow?

In terms of winter performance, things are as good as you can probably expect. The eNTYRE 2.0 is usable in lighter conditions but doesn’t handle the harsher ones too well.

The silica in the rubber compound means that the eNTYRE 2.0 won’t be hard in colder temperatures, so you can expect decent performance on clean roads. Naturally, it won’t be on the same levels as in dry conditions, but you probably won’t think about winter tires if you have mild winters.

Things are usable in lighter snow conditions if it snowed recently. The eNTYRE 2.0 does an okay job at finding traction, and even though you will notice some slip, it’s not horrible. Going into a corner should be something you should do with a bit of caution. The reduced number of sipes does cripple the packed snow performance, and you’ll notice that the tire will struggle a bit more.

This is where the good performance of the eNTYRE 2.0 ends and the bad one starts. Like most all-season tires, deeper snow and ice are conditions in which the tire won’t be very good. The traction will be very limited, and you’ll need to be extra careful as the handling will be poor.

Is it comfortable and refined?

For a while now, mid-range touring tires have surprised me with their refinement, and the eNTYRE 2.0 is no exception.

The more impressive part of the eNTYRE 2.0 is the comfort levels. It does an excellent job at softening up smaller road imperfections without getting bouncy when you drive continuously. Potholes are a tire’s worst enemy, and this one manages to dampen the blow decently well and minimize the vibrations. It may be a stretch, but it almost feels like a premium tire, something like the TrueContact Tour.

On the noise side of things, the eNTYRE 2.0 is decently quiet, and while it’s above average for its class, I wasn’t overly impressed. At slower speeds, the tire produces no noise, and over rougher roads, you can hear it a bit. On the highway, things are pretty decent, and despite the noise it produces, it’s not overly intrusive and gets drowned out with other sounds in the cabin.

Is the Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 ideal for sporty driving?

The eNTYRE 2.0 may do a lot of things right, but one thing it cannot do well is sporty driving. As a mid-range touring tire, it’s designed for normal driving, and that’s as much as it can deliver.

With the eNTYRE 2.0, you have decent levels of grip and traction, but not enough to push it. Even on a twisty road, the tire will begin to struggle if you get too aggressive.

Then there’s the handling, which I wouldn’t classify as impressive. Sure, it gets the job done for most drivers, but for enthusiasts, it won’t be nearly as responsive as we’d want it to be. There is some decent feedback, though, so that’s a minor plus.

Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 Warranty

Going back to the surprises, we have the warranty. The eNTYRE 2.0 comes with an 80,000-mile treadwear warranty for the models with lower speed ratings and 60,000 for the higher ones. This is almost a premium-level warranty, putting it close to the Defender T+H.

Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 Pricing: Is it worth the money?

As a mid-range option, I believe that Nokian hit the sweet spot with the eNTYRE 2.0. When compared with 15-inch models like the Assurance, MaxLife, P4 Four Seasons Plus, or CS5 Grand Touring, you are looking at a price difference of at least $40.

Should I buy the Nokian eNTYRE 2.0?

People that own an older car or want to save a few bucks but still want a decent performer shouldn’t avoid the eNTYRE 2.0. Like most tires in this class, it has its drawbacks in certain areas, but as an overall package, you are getting quite a lot.

Excellent dry and decent wet performance, combined with low noise and high comfort levels, make the eNTYRE 2.0 a solid touring tire. You have limited snow performance and a tire that isn’t the most responsive, but as I said, it’s not a perfect tire.

The good news is that the warranty is excellent for a mid-range option, and you won’t have to pay a premium price for this package.

While there are other tires out there, some of which may perform better, the eNTYRE 2.0 is still a very solid choice.
