Owning an SUV or a truck means you have a vehicle that can offer pretty flexible ownership, depending on your needs. Some people buy them to have more comfort in terms of interior space or ride quality, others buy them for the bigger cargo or towing capacity, and there are the third ones.

They are the kind of people that would purchase these kinds of vehicles for their ability to go off-road. Not all of them are designed equally, and some may be better than others, but overall, most of them would have no problem going on an off-road adventure.

One thing some car owners often overlook is the tires. To get the most out of your car in a specific scenario means that you’d need to have tires designed to work in those conditions. The same goes for off-roading, in which case there are two options to choose from.

Mud-terrain tires are considered the best off-road tires due to the aggressive tread pattern. Thanks to it, they can provide excellent performance in non-paved scenarios, but there is a problem. Their performance on paved roads is very limited, which is why tire manufacturers offer all-terrain tires.

They are a mix of on and off-road-performing tires, meaning that you won’t have to purchase two sets of tires, depending on where you want to drive your SUV. All-terrain tires are not anything new, and today’s choice may seem like an unusual one.

Kanati is an Indonesian tire manufacturer that deals with off-road tires and brought us the Trail Hog A/T, an all-season all-terrain tire that looks promising on paper, but how good is it in reality?

What are the features of the Kanati Trail Hog A/T?

A distinctive feature that makes this tire a bit different from most of the competition is in the winter department. The Trail Hog A/T is an all-season tire, meaning that the rubber compound has been designed to make the tire usable in the winter. The 3PMSF rating is here to give it a better performance even in slightly harsher conditions, giving it an advantage over M+S tires. As a bonus, you can fit studs to the tire that would provide even better winter performance.

Kanati Trail Hog A/T Tire Review

In the off-road department, Kanati went with an aggressive tread pattern with a few tricks up its sleeve. The tread is designed to be able to clean the grooves as you drive the tire, so you should always have maximum grip and traction.

The Trail Hog A/T is made to last and handle the extreme conditions in off-road scenarios thanks to the internal construction. The 3-ply sidewall means that the tire’s structural integrity won’t be compromised in those situations and make it more resistive to punctures.

For on-road performance, the one thing worth mentioning is the tweaks to make it quieter. Kanati designed the tread with a variable pitch technology, so it shouldn’t be too loud even when driven at higher speeds. In addition to that, the blocks have biting edges that should help improve traction in dry and wet conditions.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

The Trail Hog A/T is decent on dry roads, and that’s as much as I can say about the tire.

It delivers more than enough of what you’d need for normal driving. There is plenty of traction for your regular commute, and the tire won’t struggle with more powerful trucks. Getting too aggressive will break traction, but it’s not that terrible. The grip is also decently good, and you won’t have too many issues in the corners. With that said, don’t push it too much, as the grip levels aren’t infinite.

Handling-wise, the tire drives and is acceptably responsive. You may need to play around with the tire pressure to get it to behave as you want, but don’t expect wonders out of it.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

The biting edges around the blocks are doing a decent job of enabling the Trail Hog A/T to perform well in wet conditions.

Traction and grip levels are slightly above average for this class, and the tire can offer a safe and reliable driving experience. Like with dry performance, don’t expect it to drive like it’s glued to the road because it doesn’t have those properties. In terms of the braking distances, they are acceptably short, putting it somewhere in the middle.

Thanks to the tread design and deep grooves, one area where the tire seems to perform better is the aquaplaning resistance. Even at higher speeds, the Trail Hog A/T remains stable and doesn’t have problems with deeper water patches.

How is it over snow?

Winter performance with the Trail Hog A/T is surprisingly good, dare I say it, the best part of the on-road experience.

Thanks to the 3PMSF rating, the tire can deliver plenty of traction in light snow conditions, regardless if it’s packed or unpacked snow. Even if you run into a deeper snow section, the tire won’t struggle too much to find traction. It handles pretty well and won’t act like it has a mind of its own.

Traction on ice is a bit limited, which is to be expected. The good news is that you can remedy that with a set of #16 studs.

Is it comfortable and refined?

As an all-terrain tire, the Trail Hog A/T is acceptably comfortable and quiet on the road.

To get to those acceptable comfort levels, you may need to play around with the pressure, but the tire will be good enough once you get it right. It can absorb bumps decently okay, and the vibrations aren’t too terrible. Consider that it has a reinforced sidewall, so don’t expect it to feel super plush.

As for the noise levels, again, they are acceptable but not industry-leading. The Trail Hog A/T produces a distinctive hum that is almost unnoticeable at slower speeds but turns up when you get on the highway. It’s not deafening, but you will notice it.

Is it good for off-roading?

The Trail Hog A/T is designed for off-road, and thanks to the tread pattern, it can deliver excellent performance.

Lighter off-road conditions are no problem for the Trail Hog A/T, and there is more than enough traction for driving over gravel. The tire remains stable and doesn’t twitch too much. Mud and sand performance is also very good, and even in harsher scenarios, the tire won’t struggle for traction. You could do some rock-crawling, but keep in mind that mud-terrain tires may be a better option in this regard.

Is the Kanati Trail Hog A/T ideal for sporty driving?

No, and that isn’t something that only the Trail Hog A/T is bad at. All off-road tires struggle when you push them hard.

The main issue is the grip and traction, which are limited for that kind of driving. Plus, you have a tire that doesn’t respond anywhere near as well as a high-performance one, so you will be disappointed. Last but not least is the sidewall, which despite being reinforced, will flex a bit before the tire starts to lose traction.

Kanati Trail Hog A/T Warranty

The biggest letdown of the Trail Hog A/T is the warranty. Kanati doesn’t offer any treadwear warranty, which is not a very good sign. As a comparison, the Continental TerrainContact A/T comes with a 60,000-mile warranty. With that said, users are reporting the tire to offer over 30,000 to 40,000 miles of usable treadwear, so you can be sure that it will last a few years.

Kanati Trail Hog A/T Pricing: Is it worth the money?

Considering the overall package, the tire has some good value. It starts from a little under $180, which is a bargain when you consider that its rivals with similar sizes are over the $200 mark.

Should I buy the Kanati Trail Hog A/T?

Even though the Trail Hog A/T doesn’t impress me too much in some areas, it’s still a tire that I can recommend.

The on-road performance is decently good, and the tire won’t have any problems with everyday driving. It will provide you with a decent amount of grip and traction on dry and wet roads, meaning that you are getting a safe tire. Winter performance is surprisingly good, and the option to add studs only enhances that.

Off-road is where the tire feels at home, and you will get plenty of performance. Dirt, mud, or sand won’t cause the tire to lose traction too much, and even in harsher conditions, the tire will continue to deliver. This is thanks to the aggressive tread pattern and self-cleaning grooves.

You are giving up the treadwear warranty, which is a downside, but you are getting a tire that is far more affordable than the competition.

In general, the Trail Hog A/T is a tire that you should buy, as long as you consider the drawbacks I mentioned.
