Advanta HPZ-01 Tire Review and Rating

Since it’s an all-season tire, the rubber compound needs to be usable throughout the year. It means that it’s specially tweaked to remain softer in winter so that you can drive it when the temperatures drop. The HPZ-01 also comes with an M+S rating, meaning light snow and mud or slush shouldn’t be an issue.

In terms of performance, Advanta went with a safe but tested approach. The HPZ-01 features a larger contact patch and stiffer center and shoulder ribs. As a result, you should be looking at a tire that offers a sporty drive feel and stability.

Wet performance is also addressed, and it seems like it may just work. The HPZ-01 has 4 circumferential grooves, sipes, and some weird-looking grooves in the center ribs. All of this work together and should provide excellent aquaplaning resistance and traction on wet surfaces.

On the comfort side of things, Advanta worked on the tread design and claims that the HPZ-01 is designed to offer a quiet ride.

How does it behave on dry tarmac?

As a high-performance tire, the HPZ-01 is not the worst, but there are plenty of better-performing models out there.

I’ll start with the good part, which is how the tire feels when you drive it. It is quite sharp and responds well to inputs, as you’d expect. The feedback is also good, and you get a lot of information from the tire through the steering wheel.

On the negative side of things is everything else. Traction isn’t particularly good, and the tire will struggle with some more powerful cars. You can feather the throttle and get moving, but if you’re more aggressive, you should expect the tire to slip.

The lateral grip is another slight disappointment. If you enter a corner at a slightly higher speed will result in a slip, which is not something you’ll want to see in a high-performance tire.

The tire is safe to be driven, but it doesn’t perform as well as I was hoping it would.

How does it behave over wet and slippery roads?

Wet performance is even worse, especially in terms of traction and grip.

The HPZ-01 keeps the same driving characteristics and gives you a sporty-like feeling. Unfortunately, you cannot rely too much on that, due to the poor performance in other areas.

Traction and grip levels are barely passable in the high-performance category. Accelerating a bit aggressively or pushing the tire into a corner will result in a slip. Yes, it may be fun if you have a rear-wheel-drive car and want the back end to step, but not with the HPZ-01. In some cases, the tire exhibited unexpected behavior and may catch you off guard. This also means that you shouldn’t expect record-breaking stopping distances.

The area I have to praise is the aquaplaning resistance, which is decently good. It wouldn’t classify it as the best, but the grooves and sipes are doing a decent job and water evacuation.

How is it over snow?

Despite the M+S rating, the HPZ-01 didn’t perform exceptionally well in snowy situations. I wouldn’t rate it as terrible, but I think that Advanta could’ve done a better job.

If the temperatures are low and the roads are clear, the performance isn’t horrible. You are looking at performance similar to the dry road test in warm temperatures.

Once it starts snowing, the HPZ-01 will reduce its performance. In most cases, M+S tires fair well in light snow, but this one will struggle to find traction. Once it gets going, the grip is okay-ish as long as you don’t push it.

Winter conditions aren’t ideal for spirited driving, and you should be a bit more careful with the HPZ-01.

Is it comfortable and refined?

In the comfort and refinement part, I have some good news and bad news. The HPZ-01 is decently quiet but at the cost of a harsher ride.

the sharpness and responsiveness the tire provides will cost you a smooth ride. You will get a harsher ride, which isn’t unexpected, but this one still falls below the category average.

In terms of noise levels, Advanta delivered on its promise. Even though the HPZ-01 isn’t as quiet as a touring tire, I can say that it’s quiet as a high-performance one. Far from the top of the category, but good enough for the price. You will notice a slight hum at higher speeds, though.

Is it good for off-roading?

No, the HPZ-01 isn’t a tire that you should take off-roading. You may experience several problems in these conditions.

The first problem is the performance, even in light off-road scenarios. Some tires can be drivable on a dirt road, but the HPZ-01 will struggle a bit more. With this in mind, any more serious conditions will cause even a bigger issue.

Driving the tire in these conditions for a longer time will lead to damage, which is the second problem. As the tire isn’t constructed to take a beating in these conditions, you can damage it, leading to uneven wear.

Is the Advanta HPZ-01 ideal for sporty driving?

The HPZ-01 isn’t a bad tire for sporty driving, but the lack of performance may kill the joy.

On the driving side of things, the tire showed to be responsive and quick to respond. In addition to that, it’s very talkative you’ll know what’s going on. Both of these traits are what you are looking for in a high-performance tire.

The area where it falls short is with the traction and grip. It will struggle when put under pressure and won’t perform like other high-performance tires I’ve driven.

You can take it on a track, but you shouldn’t expect miracles. For this, I believe that the Kumho Ecsta PA31 would be a better option.

Advanta HPZ-01 Warranty

You shouldn’t expect too much in terms of warranty, considering that this is a budget-oriented model. Despite that, Advanta sells the HPZ-01 with a 40,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is 10,000 less than what you’d get with the Ecsta PA31.

Advanta HPZ-01 Pricing: Is it worth the money?

If you are on a really tight budget, it may be worth it compared to the competition. The prices start from a little under $70, which for an all-season high-performance tire is cheap. With the lower price point, you are sacrificing a lot in terms of performance. Take the Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 or the Ecsta PA31 I mentioned. Both will perform better than the HPZ-01 and cost a little more.
